Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

i haven't gotten any work done this week because i've been in denver, colorado. while i was out there i stopped by Rokmen Offroad and met part owner, Dave. Talk about a super guy! i got to check out the original "freak" and their newest creation "niblet". I got some great ideas and just had a blast talking with Dave about jeeps. couple pics for ya.

thanks man! i'm planning on a jeep 4.0l, ax15 5spd trans and np231 t-case with SYE as my #1 choice.

i'm also thinking about a 5.0l sbf mass air roller motor from a 89-93 5.0l mustang or tbi or vortec 350.

it all depends on what i can find in the best shape for the best price.

Thanks guys!

Warbeast, speaking of scrap, i have those old "custom" scrap wheels that i drilled out at the house if you are ever in my area feel free to swing by and grab them. i'll pull that motor and trans one of these days so you can pick that up sometime soon. i can't wait to get a motor in this pile. then i'll be able to deliver some mail for sure!

You will have to send me your address again. I have no idea what I did with it.

not much real progress lately. i've been ordering a few parts. i have some tube inserts, heim joints, a quick release steering wheel hub and a full body bushing kit. i'm going to start cutting out the floorboards this week whenever the rain will stop. i'm picking up some .75"x1.50" .083 wall rectangle tubing to use to make the floor supports and then i'll skin it with 14ga metal.

got my parts for the heim steering from barnes 4wd. high quality parts and next day delivery as usual! couldn't speak any better about Brad at Barnes4wd. anyone have a tool

hey guys, i need some help with seats.

I'm looking at 3 different seats.

#1, corbeau baja ss fixed back seats. i am running these in my yj and absolutely love them. they've held up great and are really comfortable when behind the wheel for an extended period of time. i know i like the fit but i was thinking a different style seat might be cool. variety is the spice of life, right?!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_BajaSS_Std_Back.jpg

#2, corbeau baja ss LOW BACK seats. i think they'll look old school in the jeep when i mount them to the cage (to be built) and will give it a cool old gasser like look or something. i think they'll be comfortable but i'm not too sure how much so without the upper headrests. your opinions? anyone running these? or a similar low back seat? your thoughts. i've really been leaning towards these but don't know if anyone is running them and if they're as comfy as the std baja ss fixed back seats.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_BajaSS_Low_Back.jpg

#3, i found these hunsaker envy seats on polyperformance's website and they've got a smokin' deal on them but i don't know if they're worth a crap AND apparently Hunsaker is out of business so that makes me wonder why they're out of business?! any thoughts?

i got busy today. i was awesome weather and it was fun to get back at it. the project i'm working on now is cutting out the old rotten ass floor and replace it and make it stronger so the tub won't flex as much.

what i started with.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2180.jpg

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2181.jpg

before i cut out the floor i added in some new cross supports to keep the tub from buckling when i cut the floor and sub-floor out. i'm going to keep these in there and i will drill holes so my rock sliders bolt to these cross beams.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2182.jpg

close up. i notched the factory vertical a-pillar support beam and welded it in. it should be stronger than factory for sure.

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2184.jpg

then i put my sawzall and grinder to work. you can see i cut the tub back to the wheel wells. this will give me more room to move my seats back so it's comfy to ride in for long periods of time.

hopefully with this crap cut out, the jeep won't smell like rotten ass when it rains like it did. haha!

i wirebrushed the frame on one side and hit it with paint. i ran out of time to do the other side. i'll hit it tomorrow.

my buddy drove his tj over (reedymsc08) so it was a good photo op.

I really like this build. has a very unique look to it. I noticed that the frame is not boxed like most cj frames right at your leaf hangers; do you intend to box it in?

Thanks! I really appreciate it. Your Copper Crawler is very badass so that is a huge compliment.

You are right, the frame is partially boxed but not fully boxed. The frame looks really similar to old C Channel frames from Willys & early CJ5s so being partially boxed was an upgrade compared to those jeeps. I'm definitely planning to box up the frame at the spring hanger. If not, I figure the frame will flex too much. I'm also planning on welding in some tubing at the rear of the frame to form an "X" that connects the frame to the rear bumper I built. This rig is extremely light so hopefully that helps it hold up okay.

thanks! sounds like a plan, may consider alil plating around motor mounts also, we have a cpl CJ-5's here that are oil canning on the inside around motor mounts (although these are amc v8's) allowing for some substantial twisting of the front frame horns. keep up the good work!...also digging the rear corner armor.

got a little bit more work done. painted the other framerail, removed those goofy turn signal since i figured they would be trail targets.

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2195.jpg

i also fixed the hood where it was all dented in. couple hammers later and it's back to it normal shape. i tried to adjust the grill since it's sitting crooked but i couldn't do much with it. i'll get it squared up when i get my body bushing kit from polyperformance this week.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2191.jpg

i like the look without those big turn signals.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2194.jpg

i got to work again this weekend after getting back from seattle for work. i got some daystar early cj5 body bushings and started replacing the old so the body and frame are square whenever i weld in the new floorboards.

i added an additional body bushing to the crossmember right behind where the seats will be. i added a 3/16" piece of plate to add a little more support to it.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2198.jpg

rear tub body mount.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2199.jpg

then i formed the .75"x1.50" .83 wall rectangle tubing for my subframe. what do you guys think?

this is the side shot. i used a hole in the frame to add a 3rd body mount per side. (daystar sent me way more body mounts than this turd has). i angled the back of the sub-floorboard so it matches the angle of the frame. still a long way to go to get this thing project finished up but i ran out of metal. i'll get more on monday or tuesday.

This thing is going to be sweet on the trail! I love the unique builds, good work man!

Thanks redlyner! I'm ready to get it on the trail for sure. It's slow going but it'll be worth the wait when I get it "finished". We'll have to go wheelin' when I get it done.

Anyone know a place in Charlotte that can ream out a steering knuckle and steering arm hole for 3/4" bolts for heim steering for a good price?

i reemed mune pitman arm with a carbime bite on a die grinder took a minute or so but worked well

i did my pitman arm and high steer arm with a cheep ass black and decker drill and a 3/4 dewalt drill bit. Use wd40 and when you done return the drill and the bit lol:flipoff2:

cool deal. thanks for the input guys!

i picked up the rest of the metal for the floor subframe. i've gota cool idea (i think) for some front tube fenders so i need to get this damn floor finished up in the next week or two so i can get started on a new project...tube fenders.
