Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

Just back up and slam on teh brakes real hard. Should pop right out of there.

Haha! That would just rip the friggin back end outa my car!

Joe's coming by to lend a hand. I guess I should have thought about the weight before I loaded it in the trunk. It's progress though...because I picked up an old greasy sm465 with a fresh rebuild :)

Thanks you Joe (TJkrawler97) for coming over and lending a hand. So what did I get? an SM465 2wd transmission from an '81 3500 series chevy wrecker. :) It's been rebuild already, has a new heavy duty 12" clutch, pressure plate and a PTO setup on the side. Joe explained what a PTO was since I really didn't know. Either way, it is pretty cool but it's definitely coming off. Anyone need one? I'll make a plate out of aluminum or something to cover up the hole that the PTO was mounted to. My plan is to mate this transmission to the 5.3L engine using a longer pilot bearing, longer flywheel bolts and a 6.0L truck flywheel. Then I'll mate the transmission to an early bronco dana 18 or an np231 or something like that.

I will DEFINITELY clean it up and throw on a fresh coat of old ford blue paint. Even though it's chevy and chevys are usually painted red, I like blue better.

You can see the PTO from this angle. This is such a short little bastard.

Heavy duty clutch. It came with another brand new 11" clutch setup if anyone needs one I've gota spare.

Joe wanted me to post up a pic of my BFV so here it is.

Hey Joe! Thanks man! I'm glad you came by. Thanks for the compliment on my YJ. I'm pretty picky with that jeep. It needs a paint job and a MarsFab cage and I'll be happy with it. :) I can't wait to get the motor and transmission in too. I've still got a long way to go on this thing but I'm feeling really good about what is left. I'm marking off more and more on the to-do list. I'm taking it one step at a time.

I didn't get much done today. This crappy weather is slowing up my productivity. I did get the new motor mounts tack welded and ready for them to get tig welded. The old motor mount is on the left. I think the new ones I made will be a little bit stronger. :)

another shot. the tubes that will be welded to the frame are random lengths because they were scrap pieces that were left over from the cage. The plates that mount to the motor are 1/4". The tabs are 3/16". The cross bar is 1/4" and the tubing is 1.75" .120 wall.

I took the PTO off of the transmission. That's PTO is a heavy little bastard!

And come to find out the person I bought the transmission was actually telling the truth. The gears looked to be in excellent shape from what I can see from the bottom. It makes me think there was a recent rebuild like they said it had.

I got the old flexplate and random things stripped from the motor this week. I'm plannning on getting the proper flywheel and parts so I can get the 12" clutch installed this week or next so I can get the motor setup between the framerails in the next few weeks.

Let me know when you need to hoist. I will drag it up there. Might even let you see the baby,.
heck yeah! you can bring it by whenever it's convenient for you in the new few days or week. i appreciate you letting me borrow the hoist again.

so I got bored at work today during lunch so I did a photoshop rendering of what I want the jeep to look like when I'm done with it, for the most part. This is about the right color I'm wanting to paint it, tube fender design I'm planning to build and front side/cowl armor I'm planning to build and tie into the rock sliders.

This is so sick! I need to get photoshop so i can try out new ideas...

Thanks man! I play on photoshop all day everyday. It's a cool program.

I went by Charles' shop today (Carpenter's Auto Service) and he TIG'd up my motor mounts for me. Hopefully ONE DAY I'll be this good at TIGing.

I forgot to add this picture the other day. It's "my personal TIG welder", Charles, laying a bead on my motor mounts. I thought it was a cool pic with his shop in the background. :)

Got back to work today. Thank goodness for the nice weather.

I finished plating the other frame rail so I can get the motor set in place in the next week or two.

Upclose of fish mouth end of plating.

Thanks for the PTO cover calipup! I got it installed today. I'll get the tranny painted tomorrow.

Framerails painted.

I also started working on the tub a little more today. I want to make sure the floor is strong so I don't push my foot through the floor when mashing the pedal for that v8. :) I'll get started on some sheet metal work soon.

That is a Chevy V8 you won't be pushing on it that hard. The brakes on the other hand....

Haha! I guess you have a point. I'm running chevy brakes too so lets hope they're as efficient.

Nothing major accomplished today. I did get the transmission cleaned up and painted. I think it turned out pretty good. It's a little lighter silver than I wanted. The paint lid was darker than the real color. O well. It does look new though.

Anybody running a flipped Dana 300 out there? I was planning in running one but I've heard a lot of horror stories about leaky t-cases with flipped 300s. Looks like I'm going to run a np241 or beefed up np231.

plenty of ppl running flipped 300s... i think leaks depend on how you run your shifters after the flip... I wouldnt expect one using the high $$$ bought flip kit to leak anymore then stockers do... but if you use the factory shift rails out the bottom, they will probly leak some

I've running a flipped D300 with the stock shift rails. I double sealed them and only the front shift rail leaks (its slightly bent), but it stops after the gear oil cools down.
Its not enough to worry me, I just top it off after 2-3 trips.
