"Gonna do it right...maybe!!??" Fuller's new XJ build!!!

Why in the hell did I finally click on this thread.
Cause u can't resist the john fuller badassery build threads..cmon, get with the program!

:lol::lol::D

hey, atleast it isn't a plastic marine tank in a john boat going across the inlet to get out to the ocean. You tell me that bouncing bastard is kosher.

But...but..you're in water!

Would I ride in Fullers trap?

But I still think he's a good feller though

You know @marty79, had you welded a piece of flat stock on top of your angle uprights and drilled a hole in that piece of flat. Then turned the pieces that go across the tank like this, "L".
You could have bolted them together which would accomplish both removal and also get the edge off the tank. Then you could easily add some rubber (bike inner tube) to those runners and it would be acceptable. Not perfect, but good enough.
Here's your chance to take some constructive criticism and run with it.

You still need a firewall though.

Of course why am I not surprised..no matter what I do its not ever gonna be good enough lol. Firewall I mentioned just don't have the plate for it. As for rubber, don't see the need. I put plenty of force down on all the pieces before welding so it ain't moving at all..nada.. But if it makes u feel better ill stick some rubber in there ...

It has nothing at all to do with being good enough, we all fall short of that from time to time. It's more about safety and foresight.
Can you honestly not see a potential issue with the edges of the angle iron wearing through the plastic tank? By your own admission, you placed a lot of force on them so there is pressure on the thin edges of a harder object being applied to the blunt area of a softer object that is filled with a very volatile liquid. That could be cause for concern for some people.

I will try to explain this in as easy to understand terms possible:

1)You ever shake a small fuel container with fuel in it that is sealed? What happens to the container?

2)What happens to metal when subjected to warm temperature, then cold temperature?

Both 1 & 2 have Expansion and contraction. The angle you used is composed of a MUCH more dense material than the thin walled tank (which is subject to a vastly different rate of expansion and contraction due to many variables)

When adjacent surfaces move independent from one another, with no buffer, you will have friction/wear. The LAST thing you want associated with FUEL, is friction/wear

Steel > Plastic. In my old YJ, I rubbed a pin sized hole on the back of of the 231 with my skidplate. All the bolts were tight and I still can't figure out how it happened, but it did. It left me stranded on a trail. Over time, that gas tank will rub against the steel and you will have a hole with gas everywhere. It would literally take 30 mins to take @Jody Treadway suggestion and implement it. This is common sense safety right here. A bike inner tube is $5. Take the time to make the tank removable with a latch system and install the rubber spacers.

This is awesome...made my day, thanks

Actually, a better way would be to implement the same TYPE of restraint the stock mount used, but inverted: Straps

(also see the rubber @Jody Treadway suggested?)

At some point I can't help but wonder if he really is just a troll and not serious. I mean, it would be pretty entertaining to get a beater XJ for cheap and just do all kinds of haxorage and post it on the interwebs to rile people up. I mean, surely someone can't do this kind of shit time and time again seriously. I mean...seriously.

Haha lol lol unfortunately its true..every bit of it. I'm no fabricator-this I KNOW! I see something, some pictures and try to build accordingly with what I have. I have made it this far and pretty successful with last rig so this one will be too...just gotta work out the "major quirks" lol...rubber it is

at some point this just isnt fun anymore.
I mean in kindergarten it was fun to pick on the kid that ate glue.
Then by like 3rd grade there were only three kids left who ate glue ( be a use big kids like @Ron Had Eaten Them All up)
there was little Eric the kid with Downs who was so loveable and sweet and innocent and you still love him today and would kill anyone who picked on him
there was little @Dylan W. who was a hoot and ate glue for kicks ..and yeah he never grew any taller but dammit he was funny and cool and you liked hi.. ( awe, thanks!)

Carry on.

Oh boys boys boys...your silly little memes

I don't understand this!!!!! He has 600lbs of 1/4+ thick steel holding a gas tank in, and some bull shit 1/8 crap for spring shackles!!! This is all just ass backwards!!!!

Why the fuck would you make a gas tank so that it could not be removed!!?? I mean at this point fuck the rubber! You can't get the tank out!!!! At what point did this seem like a good idea?? I could be shit faced drunk and high on LSD and still tell you that this is a bad idea!! I just don't inderstand.......and let's not talk about if while "welding" the holder, it didn't melt the tank......how can someone do something so bad over and over again???

But hey guys maybe he actually prepped the metal by grinding all of the yellow paint off or it burned away while he was melting??

Don't remind me..that crap was thick and took forever lol.

Btw look through the pics and you'll see all my stuff is 1/4thick.

As for gas tank...why is it such a big deal to make it removable??like besides changing fuel pump, which would be one time, when the heck do y'all ever mess with it. Maybe you like removing yours for fun but once I change fuel pumps, mine stays put and never get messed with. Propane systems I can see the need for removal but regular tank that is now mounted out of harms way would never have to be removed..not for me. ??just weird to me??to each their own but don't have any reason to ever "unbolt" the gas tank.

Until a hole gets worn in it from a piece of steel rubbing through it
