Hurricane Helene

The lack of support from the gov is painful
Wait till they hear what has started happening to the CEOs of private businesses (United health Care) 🤷🏿‍♂️

Also...seems like @jeepinmatt needs to make another trip, but this time to Asheville 😎 🔥

In case anyone was wondering how deep the water got in Spruce Pine:

Cliffs:
The town of Chimney Rock announced it will open for business next Saturday, Dec. 14, to allow visitors to support the town and see the progress that's been made since Helene caused catastrophic damage throughout the region. Christmas in Chimney Rock will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. along Main Street. Activities include pictures and toys with Santa, free Christmas goodies from renovated shops, Christmas music and free food. CityServe is encouraging guests to "adopt a business" by donating to the cause. Every dollar donated will go directly to small businesses in Chimney Rock. Parking will be at Lake Lure Beach with Shuttles running all day.

I actually rode through this area today on my way back from a hike at Linville Gorge. These pics are from where the cars are parked by the tracks in this photo.

The river is probably 15-20ft below grade.

That spot under water is the location of the blacksmithing festival they have yearly. Isn't that he last photos a little different area? Lord I hope so.
Maybe positioning is unclear. I’m facing away from the buildings, towards the river.

More just astonishing video of the amount of water and the subsequent damage.

I have about 20 new coats and gloves left over from the last delivery run
Anyone know anyone specific with a need?
Sending you a pm

Anybody got any contacts (ideally on the Tennessee side that’s been a little neglected) of people who need cleanup help with skidsteer/excavator? I know a guy who is looking to go up for a few days next week.
I know a guy. I’ll send you some info.

Just saw online that the Feds are sending 600 million to rebuild the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Can't find a news link that's not behind a paywall.

The following was on Xwitter.... With that much $$ (40 million a mile), the Trail and surrounding area will probably be overdone, and ruined.

Damascus, Va- Congress approves over 600 Million Dollars in funding to rebuild the Virginia Creeper Trail “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 $660 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯.”Typical wooden bridges / trestles are typically $300-$400 / linear foot.Estimates to replace the top 14 mile section’s 18 bridges ( 71,001 linear feet) would be just $21-28 million, well more than half a billion left over to replace a gravel path, labor, etc. For comparison a railroad is typically 2-5 million per mile, and in mountainous terrain a two lane paved highway will usually not exceed 10 million a mile. Keep in mind this is an old railroad grade converted to gravel trail for hiking and biking, not a railroad, nor paved and only 8ft wide on average.

I'm guessing there is more to the story.
