Kodak rock closed?

Right now we are still on a holding pattern . So right now just sit on your hands and do not touch a thing. All former and current jump masters will know what that means.

I'm sorry but Kodak rock isn't the only "fun"spot in the trail system or in the area in a whole.Might need to think of this as a wake up call...tough love. We have the time and man power to hopefully get things straight. The time for bitchin was last week. This week is plannin and get our heads straight on what to do. April 20th is the start on fixin things.
its the only challenge at the whole park for a built rig, and f tough love. the problem is it doesnt matter what "we" do. we can take great steps to spend time and money, and these lil teenage punks and rednecks ruin everything..... and as for artifacts....... the only reason they were discovered is because we cut into the forest to build a trail.....ill bet you there are thousands of artifacts in that forest that will never be found bec got forbid a few trees get cut down. but once they find them HOLD THE PHONE! this is a fing national treasure, we need to preserve them so our kids kids can see that once upon a time people threw rocks at birds for food.... f this crap. everyone keeps throwing ideas out there, but the real point is that the people in charge dont give a damn about our cause. all they know is that a few rednecks are mad we cant go driving throw their precious forest. my new plan is to invest all my time and efforts into the parks that apprecate my time and money. gulches, the flats, so on.....

Like said before, that trail and that trail specificly has changed drasticly in less than 10 years. 15 tops. The whole face of the climb is two to three lanes wider than originally proposed or used. THIS occurence is most definately a lack of maintenance and usage restriction by ALL parties. And yes Tellico was a water issue, a issue that wasn't delt with over years and years leading to its eroded deeply cut trail system. Open your eyes to the bigger long term picture. The status qou is broken and has been. Non tread lightly groups, big power, stupid throttle happy people have caused this over years. Its a NATIONAL PARK not a private run play ground or wheeling venture and should be treated entirely different for this very reason. Wanna keep it open shut it down and revamp the trail completely. Maintain treadlightly in the forest and play by the rules set by those who have the power to turn the switches on and off. Our parks and services are multi cultural, multi tasked, and multi managed and thus have an entirely different set of responsibilities and burdens for all those involved. The "artifacts" are just a new vehicle on the trail, how it gets opperated and maintained will determine if it sits still, moves forward; or like now, heads in reverse at high speed.

There is a lot of blame gaming, finger pointing and grumpy comments in this thread, with a few individuals making actual sense. I think some folks need to pick up a book and get a basic lesson in geology. Cant read? Ill help.
The Uwharrie mountain range is the oldest mountain range in North America.
Read that agian.

Not only is it the oldest mountain range, but it is rich with not only historic artifacts, but prehistoric artifacts, which I believe is what were found off RML. Why is the Uwharrie mountain range so rich with artifacts? Because the Uwharrie mountains held a VERY valuable resource to prehistoric humans, a resource that they traveled hundreds of miles to get to. Rhyolite.

Uwharrie is one of the very few places where Rhyolite was found by prehistoric humans. I'm talking about 1-3 millions of years ago. So, lets be extra conservative and say that it was only 1 million years ago when prehistoric humans were traveling from all over the East coast to set up a camp for a few weeks in the Uwharrie mountains. During this time they searched, collected and roughly shaped pieces of rhyolite that would later be fine-tuned into tools. They left artifacts from their camping trips all over the Uwharrie mountains, which are now managed by the US Forest Service. What Uwharrie is, above a OHV trail system, is one of, if not the most significant and historically rich sites on the east coast.
We should consider ourselves EXTREMELY lucky to have access to ANY trails.

Hell, who cares about a few broken pieces of pottery that are millions of years old, right? Im sure there is plenty of that non renewable resource somewhere else.

Maybe the trail system wasn't designed for "built" rigs when it was established.I ride along the trails and I see where folks have nailed tree after tree or bounced off embankments because what they drive is too large for the trail or just can't aim where they are going. In my opinion (and it's strictly my opinion) if you build a rig that is sutable for The Gulches,The flats, or any number of other small private parks, then what you built isn't right for the UNF trail system. It just isn't designed for that kind of wheeling. I don't go to those small parks just for that reason. What I wheel is small and compact and perfect for UNF yet would be nothing but a trail plug at Devil's Playground. I enjoyed the ledge climb just before the Kodak rock area.I could snake my way through and climb out unscathed or nothing damaged on the trail itself.I've lost that part.I'm not gonna sit here and worry myself to death over a 1.5 mile section of that trail or specificall that 200 foot section of one trail. I think it's gone.Time to salvage what's left and carry on.My time,my money,my efforts will be towards saving UNF and hopefully by MY efforts and the efforts of a large number of people on this board, we can bring things around.I've been slack on this for my own personal reasons.I'm gonna put my personal reasons aside. If we loose the area all together, then I'm gonna sit in a camp on the gravel road, light me up a big cigar ,and proclaim WE gave it our best shot.

I have a friend who has property that boarders the UNF. My friend said he knew of a spot in the forest that he could go to and find Indian artifacts. A few years ago a walking/ bike trail was built. That trail was built right through the area that my friend had found. Interesting how the forest service didn't seem to worry about arc sites then.

Hmmmmm, Whatever.

Paul I'm going to respectfully disagree. I enjoy whatching and have wished to own and build a full on horse power driven large tired rig that could dish out and take some flogging. I believe in the pursuit of what gets your kicks just like the next man. I raced for a few years and never once road conservative for the cause of tread lightly. I also NEVER raced on a Park Service trail system. The one race at UNF should be considered a fluke event so aurguing that doesn't apply. "Racing" being my current analogy for non-Tread Lightly Wheeling. The Forest is a seperate and unique trail system, with seperate needs and issues. Each Forest just like Brown MT. and others all have different errosion traits, soil compositions, plant life, or even artifacts. So treating then all like privately leased, owned land, or for profit venturing buisness should have or need not apply. Even these places generally restrict trail diversions and public jerkedness with greater vigour than we or the Forest Service has in the past at UNF. And for the record not everyone who enjoys cracking the throttle is Stupid. Stupid is as Stupid does in the wrong environment. ;)

And this is the official wording on the USFS Park website.

Date(s): Mar 27, 2013 - Mar 27, 2014
The U.S. Forest Service has temporarily closed Rocky Mountain Loop Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trail and Hang Glider Horse Trail in the Uwharrie National Forest.

The Forest Service closed the Rocky Mountain Loop OHV Trail, which includes Kodak Rock, and Hang Glider Horse trail because of excessive damage to the natural resources of these areas. The damage is directly related to recreational uses of OHVs, horses and dispersed camping off designated trails.

The trails and surrounding areas are closed for further review. The Forest Service is in the process of determining and selecting alternatives, which would protect the sensitive resources in these areas. A reopening date for the trails has yet to be determined.

Tickets will be issued to anyone found using OHVs, horses or dispersed camping in or along the closed trails.

Now i think we need to get involved as a big group, all of us to include the horse people and work together with the USFS for a solution to the issue before we loose more of the trails. But that is just me.

Sorry to be negative but this is it. They can use this on any public land they want, and that is why we will not have any to use in the future. Just keep these Nazis out of Kentucky and West Virginia, people there know how to use public land to benefit THE PUBLIC, no matter the hobby.

But are you just going to say to heck with it and not going to help us to work together as a team ?
You're asking the wrong guy here. I haven't used the URE system in 9yrs, I haven't felt the want to go back since the last time I was there. What upsets me about this whole thing is the "Public" land stigma.....and some shmuck in Atlanta making the call on it. Otherwise I'm just reading whats going on here. Don't really have a dog in the fight.

scared to death!!!!!

Aren't horse people called centaurs? It feels like it WOULD take the help of mythical creatures to save kodiak rock at this point. Hope we can work this out some how though.

Heck man. I don't rightly know. I just own / feed / ride mine.

My family and I spend almost every weekend our there, and my kids count down the days till we can go, they are 3 and 5 and I hope one day they can drive there own fig out there. I live about 35 to 45 min away and what ever I can do to help keep our trails open PLEASE don't hesitate to ask!!

First off I do appreciate nature ,and its beauty ,but I think they take it a little to far.Always asking and wanting more out of us ,and giving us less or even taking away.Has anyone actually saw the so called destruction they speak of.I have yet to see a place like this to close for a real, legitimate reason.Much less actually saw it for myself.Mountainous terrain is gonna washout on its own, thats just the way it is.They dont care until someone drives a vehicle of some sort over it ,then its all their fault,Ive seen horse trails with washes worse than jeep trails.Hell there is washed out powerline roads all over the country washing sediment into creeks all the time, you dont see anyone fixing that. The tree huggers arent gonna gripe about that because they want heat and ac in ther homes.Hope you like riding dirt roads, cause thats all you gonna have before long.Think about it ,all the time ,and money you save by not having to build your jeep to make it over obstacles, you use to maintain these state owned dirt roads!!!I believe Id invest my time and money in privately owned parks, where we can really fourwheel!!!

Have you been to kodak rock lately? A 15 ft wide trail is 200 ft wide....

I understand that, isnt there alternate lines around the hard sections, every time Ive been ther there has been a stock Jeep with us , and it went everywhere and our family had fun doing it.They also have the most fun spectating and playing at Kodak,or Daniel where its interesting, just saying .,The Kodak area seems to be the same size its been for 12 years or so years to me ,but maybe Im wrong .To me it seems like one small area in a big forest ,wouldnt think it would be that big of a deal,JMO,sorry we dont all agree
