Kodak rock closed?

I think that the only viable option to reopen is to create a two sided corridor with a guardrail and then about 10' behind that, a continuous line of 5' wire fence stretched between trees with posts in between as needed. Add to that replanting of approved Long Leaf Pines and hardwoods and any understory plants on the Forest Service list. Seed all disturbed areas and add mulch as needed. Post signage every 100' explaining the reasons and keep any kind of enforcement there and visible as much as possible. Keep one hard line and one MAINTAINED easy line where a stocker can easily ride up and allow no more lines or bypasses to be created.
You see what it needs!! It won't be an overnight fix...

I think that winning this fight while possibly losing a lot of the "options" and "high challenge" areas on this trail is much more important than losing it altogether. It will take us a full season and off season to accomplish what I am proposing. Work "WEEKENDS" will have to be re-implimented because a few hours per month will not suffice. Leaders and teams will need to be assembled with one common goal and vision in mind. We need get as much donated to this cause as possible so the FS can't say they dont have funds.

I don't understand some of the idiots on the trail. If I'm not mistake, but that trail that is to the left of the first ledge of Daniel is considered and illegal bypass right? Well there was this idiot at the firsts ledge of Daniel that was directing traffic up that bypass all day long. When I got there I informed him
That that's not a proper bypass and that if they cant make it up the first ledge that they need to turn around and pick another trail. He agreeded and thanked me for the info. About 3 hours later the same guy was there doing the exact same thing. Only this time it was a line of atv's on the bypass. After going up the first ledge I stopped and talked to the atv's and told them the exact same thing. They acted like they didnt care.

What are we supposed to do in a situation like that

Alcohol is prohibited right? because i seen a ton of people drinking while on the trails? And did anyone happen to be at the top of daniel when there was the guy with the horse up there?

No drinking is allowed. If you see it you can report vechile to officer Foote. The horses are allowed on the OHV trails iirc...

How can we report this? How do we contact the authorities when we are on the trail?

Would be nice to have the contact numbers posted on the trail head & in places on the trail too. (high up so that can't be reached easily)

jw bout the horse and thats what i thought i swear i picked up like 20 beer cans and there were definitely more than that but didnt want to cause a lot of congestion with all the people out there. We are gonna go back next weekend and pickup more.

The sad part is there really isnt a way without coming off the trail really. I will also inquire about how they want they want us to report these things.

Snappy, thanks for your time in doing this. If you don't mind, please keep us posted. I thought about contacting the FS myself too, but didn't want to flood them with the same questions over and over.

This might be a topic for another thread, but I'm just getting involved beyond the typical work weekend level. For people like myself (there seem to be many), what do we need to do to get 'in the loop'? It seems that there is a definite lack of leadership (or just communication) amongst our ranks. Not pointing fingers and I may be ignorant, but I would like to know about becoming informed, having a presence, and getting it done!

As said, I haven't been involved from the communication side. Maybe I am completely off, but I'd like to be on board and know that we as a community have a common goal. It seems like all the individual clubs have the same ideas, but might not be on the same page.

I am trying to figure this one out! This seems to be the hurdle right now. Alot of help wanting to know what to do and no real answer coming down the line...

This has always been an issue. No phone service, no way to positively identify abusers unless they're in a vehicle with tags.

I think a swift baseball bat to the head and rolled off the side of the mountain would deter people then the fs wouldn't be bothered with calls.
Can anyone offer a solution we can take to the forrest service?

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks like this but why are horses allowed on the ohv trails? They already have more miles of trails than we do, if they are allowed on our trails maybe we should be allowed on there's.

I agree and its hard to yeild to them when your heading up daniel or on top of an obstacle

Dosent the forest service have a side by side? I thought it came up before that they did but anyway I think some of the problem is that none of the rules or laws of the land are enforced on the trails. I've been going to ure for years and the only employees I've seen are in the parking areas. It seems like if they were on the trails handing out tickets and making it hurt where it counts to these people that don't stay on the trail or are drinking etc that it would change some things. If a few people are ticketed it will pass by word of mouth etc and I bet would make a difference. I think most of it is lack of knowledge on the offenders part on the bypasses but if there was a presence of authority on the trails it would make people think twice about drinking on the trails or littering etc.

Maybe work the fines to go back into repairing the problem areas just a idea.

I have in these threads.
Any vehicle other than those with DMV tags and registration needs to have identifying numbers posted on them just as boats do.
Anyone with a boat knows that you don't even go to the lake without the registration numbers on the boat.

I will put this on the punch list to ask Terry about...

A 1.5 mile section of rock mount loop is closed. We talked about the artifacts, from what she said are the rocks above Kodak that the indians used to make arrowheads are now being used by campers as fire rings.
What if the campers were native americans? Would it be ok then?

300 years from now will they shut down the flying car trails because they find some lug nuts?

That will work for identifying purposes, however they still need to be caught in the act on the trail. Even if they have side by side vehicles do they have the man power to patrol the trails & the road? How many officers does URE have?

Need the rumor mill running here, "hey man don't get caught up there drinking" ..

What if all of us atv riders use a desert flag with our SS number and name on it. You think that would be enough numbers on the machines? Then you'll be able to email the officer and tell them that you saw them going around a big rock illegally, the day after. Maybe if the FS would dig out some dirt making some big ledges on the beginning of each trail, no atv's or motorcycles could ride at all. By telling someone that if you can't get over the rock at all and turning around, is about dumb. The bypass thing is unclear to everyone I know.

I don't know the FS personally at all, but I wonder how much of their day goes to responding to questions from people asking when that eroded side of the mountain will be open again. I love Kodak just as much as the next wheeler, but we all know that entire area has been played on with borrowed time. All of you know which is next on the chopping block, Daniel.

Not one of you will stop everyone from being ignorant out there. I think you all have done a great job with spreading the word about keeping the place nice, neat and orderly. However, you seem to be complaining to yourself (4x4 folks). I had some riders in our group up there this weekend getting some play time on their atv's. None of them were aware of why the trail was closed. I told them about the offroad community says that we (atv's) do the most damage and also told them that we should help out more often. I do my part in preventing my fellow atv riders from acting like idiots. Nothing wrong with chatting it up with the atv riders, they are there just as you to have fun. Not once, has any jeep, truck, 4x4 person stop and talk it up with me. This jeep/atv thing is just like boaters and jet skiers, it's stupid.

With that said, I'll be there this coming Saturday on my yellow atv to support the place by buying my permit, supporting the Outpost by buying my food, drink and gas from them, and when on the trail, I'll be going around every obstacle that my wheeler won't go over.

Well it's the truth. Clearly the front side of Daniel is not a trail that is designed for ATV's. unless your a super experience ride there is no way you can make it up the first ledge safely. I understand everyone isn't informed of all illegal bypasses and trail closures, but you should take it upon yourself to inform yourself of what's happening at our favorite trails. !

If the trail is to tough stay off it. It's simple really there's a ton of trail find ones that suit your style and rig.

Oh haha Smartass lol
