Kodak rock closed?

I was way more active when I was young and single, say 17 yrs ago. I'm 37 now. I did take a hiatus and rode and raced bikes for several yrs. I remember the 25 anniver. ride with the CTB at UNF. A few yrs back was my first revisit to the system. This trail was so changed I didn't recognize it. I climbed to the top and went end to end and after parking actually asked if it was new! Please keep in mind I have no sense of direction, I've drove and rermembered stuff by landmarks my whole life. So I really thought it was something new.

Think about it ,all the time ,and money you save by not having to build your jeep to make it over obstacles, you use to maintain these state owned dirt roads!!!I believe Id invest my time and money in privately owned parks, where we can really fourwheel!!!
and what pray tell is "really fourwheelin"to you? Please enlighten me because apparently I haven't been doing it.

" real fourwheeling" ....well that is easy, its when you go out and destroy the obstacle or your rig, what ever it takes! The more the challenge the better! Then (what I prefer)is Trail riding (what I think URE was designed for) that is were you enjoy the wilderness while you ride through with an occasional obstacle that you go over with as little damage as possible. I mean let's face it 95% of URE can be done in 2wd. Some people like to just be out there to enjoy the people and the freedom of the world and enjoy a more simple life, others don't really care they just want to make it on YouTube rolling their rig are braking something.

I'm sorry but that's stupid, I like a challenge but fucking shit up is not the game plan(rig or trail). If you want a serious challenge there are places else where.

what get's me is the whinning done over a 200 foot section...not the fact 1.5 miles is actually closed. If somebody rather spend their time, efforts, monies on private parks, that's fine. Please by all means do it and have a good time. I'll have a good time myself enjoying what UNF has to offer me RIGHT NOW.

The Kodak area seems to be the same size its been for 12 years or so years to me

Nah, there's a piece of guard rail running more or less right down the middle of the Kodak "area"... everything to the right side of the guard rail isn't/wasn't part of the trail. I'd show you tomorrow... but that's not an option anymore.

Not sure why I wants to make this a quote

OK... if you read the above statement ^^^^ it would appear that what is being said is that what we do in URE in not "real wheeling" most people in URE don't try to destroy anything (note 95% can be done in 2wd) therefore all that is left is destroying shit witch by the above statement must get the title of "real wheeling" ...its deep I know! Anyway I think we have all beat this horse long enough!! For those of you that are going to URE, were will our new hang out be??? I guess Daniel right?

Thank you for pointing that out to the sheep.

Again I ask,who authorised the building of the bypass to the right?

WOW, just WOW.

I keep trying to get this thread in the correct direction to get people to try and come together to try and make the situation and it just goes downhill. It just keeps going south. Really wonder how many other people are really interested in doing what it would take to get it opened back up and get the other trails to standard before this happens to them. Maybe that should be for another thread.

What will it take? What is the standard? What is the direction?

I/we appreciate all you do, please find out exactly what needs to be done & I am sure many will come together & do whats needed.

put it in linear form, for the simple minded like me:)

I agree with you, I will be out there when my schedule allows. I have been bringing my daught there since she was 16 months. She will be 10 in June. I would like it if I can bring my grand children there too..

However to your post about getting this thread on the right track. Until we know what track that is it will continue to be a bitching session..

Yes it is shut down till WE do some work on it. Before you decide to make a phone call and get it shut down please read this. It WAS NOT the local USFS that said to do this. This came from Atlanta directly and their people. Calling Terry / Debra / Michele / Rodney / Drew or anyone else local and complaining is not going to help our cause. Call Atlanta HQ and talk to them. And i would not recomend complaining to them either as that will not help your cause.

The only way it will open up is if we get off the net and get out there and finish what a bunch of us has started this year.

Look, if this is not a motivating reason to get people up there on these workdays to work then i do not know what would be. The USFS has pretty much put the ball in our court, now we either step up to the plate or we go whining down the road.

I know what i will continue to do, what will you do ?
So what is the real reason the trail is closed? Is it the artifacts or is it the guardrails? Seems like you are using both as a reason. This is no where close to how Tellico got closed.

That's a bullshit thing to say.

I guess he should have to pay to repave 109, too... since people couldn't get to his store if the road wasn't there.
Now that's a bullshit thing to sy.

Wrong question;

Right question;

What needs to happen to get it back open?

What needs to happen to keep the trails we have now open?

How are the needed resources going to be acquired?

After a 30 min convo with Ranger Walker i feel that the writing may NOT be on the wall about Kodak!!! They are reviewing what actions to take next with the trail in that area. We also talked about how the clubs need to take charge of there trails... Basicaly a club rep can talk with Terry and get a day for her to ride there trail and make a punch list that they can then post.

We are in charge of OUR OHV trail system!!! I will post other ideas we discussed today in the other thread. Ranger Walker is with us and is using the volenteers as leverage ( as in there are too many resources invested to close the trail, the more vol hours the more resources the forrest gets). I also requested items in writing that we need to do and will be following up withing the next 2 weeks with a list to start on!!!

In closing I feel like we can do this guys. We need to watch daniel trail, i hear people are already starting illegal bypasses on it, so please police these areas and be proactive...

Thanks guys! I was hoping to see Terry out there but didn't run into anyone. I'm sure Daniel will be a mess in short order. Kodak really needs to get re-opened and quickly. I hope we can get something in writing before the workday on the 20th and hope a ton of people show up for it.

I signed up at the tread lightly booth today to help on the next work day. Let me know if there anything I can do before then. I literally live like 20 minutes from Uwharrie. Me and my husband would be more than happy to help.

Keep us posted, possibly a "date/ info for that date" only type of thread with no discusion or clutter.

get these things up to the standard they need to be at to keep them open.

This is the part that confuses me. What are these standards? The trails look fine to me.

Danny that was part of what i was trying to get Ranger Walker to undetstand, that we see it as ok but they see as issues. She named off several items. One being the wash outs and drainage ditches need to be cleaned out and new hay bails placed. The other is rocks or other errison control methods at all creek crossings. I explained we needed this in writing and i will be in contact with Terry to get this info but it is going to take a little time so we can get spefic info on each trail because the all have there own needs.

I feel like I missed something. Do I have this story right? Bikers were riding on an illegal bypass and found artifacts. Then they turned them into outpost. Now the trail is closed to look for more artifacts?
I thought the trails just opened this weekend?

Rode by the closed section yesterday, looked like an awfully nice and expensive sign for an emergency temporary closure. Not to mention the nice shiney guardrails that were up.
Just saying, kinda makes you wonder.

A 1.5 mile section of rock mount loop is closed. We talked about the artifacts, from what she said are the rocks above Kodak that the indians used to make arrowheads are now being used by campers as fire rings. This was compounded by the widening of the trail. So they closed the whole section until they can figure out what to do.

There are several plans of recovery the forrest service is looking at. She gave me a couple yesterday. She was upset that the order came down also so bare with her guys, the last option she wants to see is permant closure..

Options included:
Closure of primative camping in the area.

Capping the artifacts with a membrane cloth and covered with dirt. The cloth would give future expolration a layer to judge the presevation efforts.

The trail will have to be "narrowed" back up at the section around Kodak rock.

Her least favorite one(from talking to her it will be the last resort and she will help us fight it) is closure for good.

There are more options also. This is not offical word from the forrest service but a recap of a postive convo I had on ab afternoon that was provided for us to talk to the Rangers. I hope others took the time yesterday to do the same and will post out there info also.

I think that the only viable option to reopen is to create a two sided corridor with a guardrail and then about 10' behind that, a continuous line of 5' wire fence stretched between trees with posts in between as needed. Add to that replanting of approved Long Leaf Pines and hardwoods and any understory plants on the Forest Service list. Seed all disturbed areas and add mulch as needed. Post signage every 100' explaining the reasons and keep any kind of enforcement there and visible as much as possible. Keep one hard line and one MAINTAINED easy line where a stocker can easily ride up and allow no more lines or bypasses to be created.
