NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

Slipping in quietly with no light this morning camera sends me a pic two big bears at stand I quickly turn light on and make a little noise I was less than 100 yards when I got text
Nah, just keep moving quietly. Might get a meal, might be a meal. Redneck roulette lol.

Not a bad day on the water.

Finally this old boy slipped up and followed a doe in broad daylight. Had only been seeing him at night or early in the morning before shooting light. That 3rd main beam is too cool!

Finally pulled the trigger on a buck off our family farm. Last light and got a glimpse of the rack but saw the bigger and darker body than anything I had seen this year and let one fly. 6.5 Creedmoor shooting the 143gr Hornady ELDX. Dropped where he stood.

All I shoot is the Hornady 143gr, it does great! Pretty sure the 6.5 Creed is my favorite all around cartridge.

I started deer hunting in 2017. My son got his first deer last year at 10 years old. I’ve let 4 or 5 spikes and a couple doe walk. This morning I got up at 315 and drove to SC to see if I could finally make it happen. Sat for an hour and was blessed to get my first deer.

I now pronounce thee “hooked”. You’re screwed now. Congrats!

Shot a decent 8 point yesterday around 5:30pm. Should have been an easy day. Get the deer, drop it off at the processor, be home for dinner. Noooo. Jeep got stuck whilst retrieving the deer. Many hours later, I finally get freed, thanks to a good buddy, and make it home by 1am. His truck got stuck getting me out, so it turned into a double recovery. Outstanding evening. Nonetheless, I have deer meat.
Stories like this are better than simply taking it to the processor!

Not a bad day on the water.
My BIL is down now and has been killing them.

Started a euro mount from the Thanksgiving buck. Skinned it down and used the pressure washer to remove 90% of the fat, flesh and brains. Still need to do a simmer to remove some stubborn junk in the nasal cavity then I’ll color it just enough to remove any staining.

He was 150lbs dressed and 48lbs once everything was in the cooler.

I had a Ruger American just like that(minus the cheek-weld pad).

.308?

I really liked it. But I put a Precision Armament's muzzle brake on it, shot it in an enclosed space a bunch, and gave myself a serious case of brain damage that almost ruined my life for two years.

All that being said, an excellent gun. Never got to kill anything with it though. But it did get traipsed around in a futile bear hunt for about 13 hours.

His is a 6.5 Creedmoor. The family is from Ohio and grandpa/ma have a farm there. I'm pretty sure they will hunting there when they go there for Xmas.....so he could take a bigger buck than the 2 he has shot !

Damn son, aren't there any does on that lease? Shooting next year's bucks, today...

I'll give you a pass then 😅

What's the rational for buck only though? Last time I was in the mountains there seemed to be plenty of deer.
It really depends on where you are in the mountains, west of Asheville where I’m at averages .4 bucks per mile. The property I’m hunting has a good amount of deer (mostly does and yearlings) there were some nice bucks around but when the velvet came off they disappeared. I’ve walked 20-30 miles in a weekend on public and have found little to no sign. Go 25 minutes away and I can about guarantee seeing deer.

That said I’ve passed 5 bucks on this property this year, I’ve hunted hard on public and had some bad luck this year, passed on a buck thanksgiving morning up here, then passed on 6-7 the following day hunting down east waiting on a doe to roll through didn’t happen and I like to have 3 deer in the freezer and this one made 3. I’ll be hunting the rest of the year but don’t plan on shooting unless it’s a decent deer.

Personally I’d be fine if the state turned our area to single buck no doe to have the population increase but public has turned into a dead zone here.

I’m not a great hunter but I’ve put some time in this year and constantly on deer, we’ve hunted 5 different game lands 2-3 days each and always had at least one opportunity. I shot a good buck and wasn’t able to recover it, even after calling a tracking dog. So it was nice to put some meat in the freezer again.
