NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

I didn't even know it existed and plan to bow hunt it, so I'd say odds are good. It's late oct-early Nov.

If anyone wants a group hunt, im open to it.
I'm tapped out. We put in for three deer permits in NC, plus swan, and quail.
Pig/deer in GA plus quail. SC, TN, AL for quail. Probably going to Ohio, NY, and PA for birds pheasants, grouse and possibly LA for woodcock. Plus field trials I threw down the list and my wife nearly killed me

Well after reading that, my wife was slightly less appalled at my list. I've acquired 3 new properties to hunt this year, taking a 3 day camping trip at Thurmond Chatham to prepare for a tentative 5 day camping trip to Nantahala, and possibly a hunt at second creek. Not to mention taking up bowhunting to ensure I have time to take the boys whenever they want to go this year.

That's just my "out of town" schedule. I'll still hunt here local and hunt down east every weekend I can and that place is 4hrs from the house.

We just have an understanding from September-February I'm going to be hunting or doing dog events. Rest of the year we do what she wants. But she does go to the dog events with me.

@JSJJ388 I'm open to a group hunt. Shoot me the dates.

Heres the list. Do a search for Second Creek and itll show the dates. Im considering the 01/28-11-3 hunt for hunting evenings, but nothing is set in stone.

It also doesnt have to be a permit hunt. If you (or anybody else) wants to get togeter and hit up some gamelands in the area Im down. Im up for Second creek, Yadkin River, Perkins, Thurmond Chatham, Mitchell River, or Kerr Scott.

Ladder tree stand recommendations?

I saw some really nice aluminum ones on a property a while back. About 20ft tall, sturdy as hell, probably expensive and heavy. No idea who made them, but it wasn't Bass Pro quality. Likely somebody local-ish, since the ladders were one piece.

The LD14 is by far my favorite. Very comfortable.

I've never had a problem with the Walmart special buddy stands. Plenty of room for my fatass and my kid if he wants to go. I just replace the ratchet straps every few years.

Along the best tree stand line, anybody here saddle hunt? It looks like the ticket for those of us who like to be on the move but man it aint cheap.

Havent sat in a saddle yet but I'd be hard pressed to get ready of my Summit Viper climber. I can have it setup and in a tree in a hurry, plus its very comfortable and lightweight.

True. I have a few climbers and love them.

Have a saddle and still wear it for a harness. But a good lock on is where it's at. But it also makes me sick to think how much money I got tied up in my setup

Never used a lock on. But Id be open to it. Mainly wanting a good way to get up a tree on gamelands.

My view on saddles are they are useful for scouting hunts. I use 3 double step sticks. Wear my saddle. If I'm hunting a new area I'll scout my way in and then setup and hunt 2-3 hrs in the morning( won't step into the woods until daylight). If I saw deer or think it's still a good spot I'll go back out ang get my lock-on. But to do more than a couple hour sit and be comfortable with a saddle you need a platform. My lock on is only a pound heavier than my platform so I just take my lock on.

To get a "light" lock on and sticks is big money
It's all a give and take weight, comfort and money

My 20’ muddy stands have held up well, even through some PA winters.

I have a 20+ yr. old school API climber and I love it. It's light to carry, easy to climb any tree and it's comfortable. I just replaced the old chains and its ready to go climb another tree.

I had a cable one one that had rusted inside the plastic. Damn thing dropped me 15' out of the tree with no warning when I went to set it.

Threw up one of my old stands on a new property today. I have suspicion that somebody else was/is hunting it and didn't want to hang a nice one. Should make a good bow stand and a great rifle stand.

Always have a vest or harness to cinch yourself to tree when are climbing and coming back down. You might slip but the harness will stop you falling to the ground. I like to get high 25/30' high bow hunting and practice from that height, higher when hunt w a gun. I never fell w strap on the tree attached to me, I prolly slipped 3 times but the gear stopped me from falling. One night I lowered my bow to the ground and was climbing down when the cord from the seat and the stand got cut from the teeth on the stand and the stand fell to the ground! Then I had to shinny down the tree moving the safety belt and dropping the seat to the ground. It was not easy and I learned to never cut line between the to seat and the stand.

Yep, learned that the hard way. Also learned about tying the halves together the hard way. Had the bottom slip and fall about 5', and it wasn't tied. I was young (like 12-13) in both cases and it was my first season using a climber with no one to show me the right way. I actually quit using them for a few years after that until someone told me what I was doing wrong. Thankfully I was still young enough to just bounce when I fell!!!

I also learned not to but the first twp climbing stick up so high you gotta take a big jump to get on it. Stick kicked out and my lineman line was loose I fell further than I should and stopped after slamming into the tree with the tips of my toes touching ground but not enough to get my weight on them. I just carry an extra stick now

Years ago a fella back home fell out of his stand and broke his back. These were the days before cell phones. Nobody knew where he was. Laid out there for about 24 hours before they found him. He was never quite right after that. I’m guilty of not always tying off. I should do better.

Proud dad moment - the only things that I did were baiting the hook and taking the fish off. My 3 year old son cast the bobber/worm out, hooked the bass, stuck the butt end of the rod under his arm and reeled it in the whole way unassisted with the drag going crazy.

Fil caught a really good bass the first night we were up in the mountains - he said it made the whole trip up there worth it.

Little man’s fish is bigger than anything I’ve caught out of the lake this year. Awesome! I remember my boys first fish. Proud dad moment.
