Hi,

I am trying to guage interest from you guys of an investment project that my brother and I are contemplating. We potentially have access to a block of 500+acres of land with 70% woods with a decent size creek flowing through the whole piece of land, hills, rocks, etc. My question to you guys is we if we embark on this we are planning to build a system of trails much like "uwharrie". The difference is this land is very easily accessable from 4 lane hwy and in a great location in the foothills. Its in NW NC, approx. 30mins. from Winston-Salem and 1 hr. North of charlotte. We would like to build an alternative to Uwharrie thats closer and easier access and privately owned and operated. We all love Uwharrie and its a great place to ride I our idea is just to open another option. We would most likely charge a ride fee and/or sell season passes again like Uwharrie.

Again, nothing is even close to final on this project im just guaging interest, if we get a huge response that will definately aid in the decision and if not then maybe its a bad idea. PLEASE respond with your comments, suggestions, thoughts, etc..

Heck yeah, I'd try it, providing the fee is fair. I'd think you would have to check into insurance.

I think it sounds great, and so will every one else. I know i would help support a privetly owned trail system. This is something i would love to be able to do one day. Good Luck:)

rob,

thanks for the response. thats what im looking for as far as things that we would need to do to be legal.
i have thought about insurance, what about EPA issues with driving thru the creek on private land? anybody?

woodkrawler, I would contact the folks who run Paragon, ask what issues they may have ran into. I don't know anyone else who has either started one or attempted to start one.

yea i'd try it out

Sounds real close, I would try it.

Woodkrawler,
Great idea!
I am working on something similar in SC as we speak (already have the land trails are in development)

PM me if you wanna chat about environmental issues, I have both a forest ecology and wildlife biology degrees, and a long history of dealing with EPA issues in the logging industry I can help out all you need there.

per Rob's suggestion contact Kyle Knosp who is I believe the owner of Paragon. If it hasen't changed I have his ph & email. You can PM me for them.
Also contact the Baltimore 4 Wheelers concerning Paragon, some of the members are very active there.
I think Rebel Rock club has a hand in Coal Creek as well ( Windrock Off Road Park)
Always happy to try New Dirt.

Definitely a great idea and worth looking into. Seems you could probably pay the taxes on the land with the fees collected. Also, you could put the majority of the land into a conservation easement, which would (as I understand it) relieve you of taxes so long as the land remains undeveloped and natural.

im trying to get a handle on what size we could build, anybody know how large DPG is? acreage? i know paragon and windrock are huge - like thousands of acres...

justin and i are thinking about a similar project, not as big, but close to raleigh, you sound like your closer to getting started though. great idea too.
and if the wheeling isnt as good as youd like let us come kill animals there:D

Yeah id defiently come if I have the Jeep by then. Im sure most people wouldnt even mind paying a trail fee and donations to help keep it up, even voleenter to help clean and maintain trails.

sure, especially if there were a good mix of difficulty levels, not 90% easy like uwharrie, and 99% huge like DPG, plus it sounds really close to where i live :)

Just keep in mind that 500 acres isn't a whole lot of room. You're basically talking about a small playground-type place with space for maybe a couple of trails, depending on how stuff lays out.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

thats my only concern, the trail(s) would definately have to be laid out correctly.
