PreRunner to 4x4 Swap

4.7's are in! Josh and Frank at Universal are great guys to deal with, never had any problems, plus top notch work! Everything turned out great, no complaints! The gears are awesome, they made a huge difference... I love it :D I'll get some pics up later

Better pics will come and possibly a video... this things great :D

Well truck is back to prerunner status... I swapped all my 2wd stuff back in yesterday/today. Talk about one of those days where anything and everything went wrong lol. The guy purchasing the front end came to pick everything up, my 2hr job turned into a 6hr job... my left spindle, 3 of the 4 bolts were stripped all to hell. So I ended up just taking the whole lower ball joint off to save some time... finished everything up this morning and she's back on the road.

The goal is to have everything ready and for cutting to start around the end of April - early May. I can't wait to get this thing together... the 4.7's are crazy low... the rear brakes wont hold them. On gravel/slick concrete I can hold the brakes and the rear tires will slowly turn themselves without giving it any gas :D

I got all my Trail-Gear stuff ordered today

1) high steer kit
2) 6 shooter knuckles
3) power steering lines
4) steering shaft
5) firewall plate
6) knuckle stud kit
7) diff cover
8) axle gusset
9) creeper joints for the links (and all other odds and ends)

It's slowly but surely coming together... I'm going to order my drilled and slotted rotors, calipers, pads and oil pan conversion this week sometime.

Had some more stuff come in today. I definitely had a moment of realness today, this whole solid axle swap is no longer just b/sing among friends... The only items I have left to get is the coilovers and the coil hangers and the axle mounts. I can't wait to get this thing on the trail to see what it will do.

Anyways... here is what came in today. The oil pan, strainer and strainer gasket all came in. Then when I got home I was happy to see my Marlin Crawler order came in. I got my Spartan front locker, axle rebuild kit and low-pro drain plug from them.

I got my winch control switch hooked up tonight. I thought that it turned out pretty good

I'm ordering coilovers probably this thursday... that's the last thing I have to get before the swap, other than getting the axle rebuilted/geared/locked. The stuff from Trail-Gear should come in towards the end of the week. I can't wait to get the six shooter knuckles! :D

I has drums in the rear. I would love to find a way to put tacoma rotors in the rear, or even the old solid axle front rotors up front

Theres a company who makes bolt brackets for disk. All you need are the lines sa rotors and sa cailpers.

hmmm interesting

Who makes the brackets? Because all I have found were for a weird ass setup, like a old-ball year chevy setup. I would like to keep it fairly simple to keep up with and also keep it yota

Here's one of the company's who makes the brackets for SA stuff. Click here Davesperfomance also makes brackets for way cheaper. Here's a good write up on pirate. You could just make you your own brackets if you have the means to do it. I know sky and i think trail gear has a kit but it uses chevy parts.

I think RuffStuff Specialties makes brackets that allow you to use the factory front Tacoma rotors and calipers on the rear, I think they are about $50. Never tried them, but that's the route I'd go. I have used plenty of RuffStuff products, just haven't tried the Tacoma rear caliper brackets.

While you are at it, I would ditch the load proportioning valve (brake bias) under the bed and put a manual one (turn knob to adjust) either in the cab, or under the hood. You will possibly need to upgrade the master cylinder, but that is an easy swap to an old 1" bore chevy master cylinder. I think Sky-manufacturing.com makes the adapter. The master cylinders are CHEAP too, and readily available at any auto parts store normally.

FWIW, the chevy caliper swap is plenty for the rear, those calipers are cheap and easy to find, unless you use the monte carlo ones with the E-brake.

I will be looking into both of those options in the future, but right now I just have to stay focused on the SAS.

I got the coilovers ordered today from Carolina Truggies, great guys to deal with! I spoke with Alex and Josh. They had some great info as far as my setup/coil selection and all that other good stuff since this is my first go around with coilovers. I can't wait to get these things, going to be good
I got 12 inch Fox Emulsion's, 10 inch upper coil - Eibach @ 250lbs, 14 inch lower coil - Eibach @ 350lbs.

Workin' on it man! If you want to throw some cash my way we can start cutting on it ASAP! :D

Slowly buy surely it's coming along... I got some more goodies in the mail today

My stuff from Trail-Gear came in. I'm very happy about everything except for one thing... I talked to Trail-Gear about the steering shaft. They don't offer it individually on their site, only with a kit. So they were told that EVERYTHING to do the steering shaft swap was needed. They sold me a "steering shaft assembly" which turned out to just be the shaft... so now I have a shaft with no joints. They want an additional $100 a piece + shipping per joint. I was/am a little pissed to say the least. On top of that I asked if they could give me the product number on the joint (I work at a parts house/find it local) and they would just say it's a Borgenson joint (knew that...) This is the first bump I've ran into with the whole swap, other than what steering to run, so I can't complain too much...

Anyways, here's just a few or the things that came in. :D

Nah, have to use the Borgenson joints, or try to rig something up with the stock. I will probably end up doing the new joints just to be safe.

I picked up the axle friday night, got it stripped down this afternoon and I have all the parts in the wash right now. I hit another bump. My buddy just SASed his 95 4runner. His brakes bolted up to the axle (82) no problem. So I order slotted and drilled for mine (supposed to be an 82) well turns out I think it's a 79-80 axle. Instead of AISAN hubs it has ASCO hubs. From what I have found they are as strong/a pre AISAN hub.

If you guys have anything to add please chime in any info if good info!
