PreRunner to 4x4 Swap

I've seen that conversion. The only thing is I would have more in that than what it would take to just swap the rotors out. I have to get 79-80 Landcruiser rotors. Plus, I can't do chromoly hubs with the IFS, or so I've heard. The ASCO and AISAN are supposed to be the same/interchangeable They just came in the 79-80 axles. <-- what I ended up with. I called my buddy that I got the axle from (he had three there) he said that he knew one was a later model axle and I could come and swap out the hub where the rotors bolt up, but I think since the 79-80s have the rotors bolted on instead of them being pressed in they would be better/easier to work on in the future.

You can if you pick up aisan hubs and put chromo hub gears in them. The only difference between the sa and ifs hubs are the flange the wheel mounts to.

10-4

I will probably just end up sticking with these and doing chromo gears in them. I have been stripping everything down. I got the axle tore apart and steam washed today and I also broke down the lock out hubs. I have one side painted up, now I just have to get to the other side. I'm going to put the internals back through the parts washer before reassembly. I will try to get some pics up shortly of this weekends progress.

I think Redneck92 may be forgetting you have a Tacoma, not a pickup. If I am thinking correctly (99.9% sure), none of the IFS stuff off a Tacoma will work on a solid axle. As far as I know, the only thing you might can salvage is the front calipers/rotors to a rear disc conversion.

I know you can get the kit to use the Tacoma brakes, but you have to run the Pickup IFS hubs. I had just head that you couldn't do the chromo hubs with them but I don't know. I haven't looked into that much.

Here's some of this weekends progress. Theres more that I haven't gotten pics of yet...

No but I can see why you thought that. When I said ifs I meant pre-taco ifs. Anyways it's moving along nicely.

Actually, I was wrong (I'm behind the times!) I just clicked the link you posted from FROR, you CAN use the Taco rotors/calipers on the SA front with their kit, and I LIKE the way they designed it!

I am gonna have to look at my FJ-80 axle and see if I can design the front brakes to work like they have done, it would be very nice to not have to pull the bearings apart when replacing a birfield (I plan to run stockers for awhile). Plus, it's really nice to not have to be able to change brake pads and rotors in about 30 minutes (doubt I will ever need to though).

You have to turn your hub down for the rotor to fit over the hub. I'm not sure if it's possible but you might be able to use a mini truck hub and use taco rotors and fab a bracket for the caliper. I'm really just thinking in the wind there I'm not sure if thats fesiable.

The silver on the hub dials turned out to be bad paint :flipoff:
Luckily I only did the one hub, so I have to strip it off and re-do that. the main part of the hubs came out good and cured. I scraped the paint off the letters/arrows and it turned out half way decent.

I also ordered the steering shaft joints that I need, along with some chromo hub gears  figured why not since I already have them apart, plus one side had a little bit of rust on it.

I got the 3rd, gears and locker dropped off last night so they will be done in a day or two. I'm trying to find time to finish cleaning everything, putting the bearings/seals back in. Wednesday or Thursday I should have the knuckles and everything back on ready to reassemble.

Also figured out the hub/rotor issue. I ordered some 79 FJ40 rotors to see how the size up and they will work like a dream! So I believe I have gotten all the kinks worked out for now

I was able to make some more progress tonight. I have gotten the axle wire-brushed down pretty good. I'm not too worried about it until it has everything welded to it. Then I will get it nice and clean before painting.

I got the other lockout hub body/face painted tonight, along with the wheel hub. Everything is coming along nicely. The gears/lockers should be done wednesday/thursday. I got the call today that my coilovers were here, so I will go pick them up thursday. The steering shaft joints and chromo hub gears should be here first of next week. I can't wait to get this thing under the knife :D

Been a very productive last couple days. Thursday I went to Carolina Truggies and picked up my coilovers. I can't say enough about the guys there. Alex and Josh were awesome to deal with and were able to give me some pointers/suggestions on my setup. I will be going back to them when it comes time to re-do the rear setup. I also got my brake issues worked out. After having to order 5 rotors, I finally got two that were right (boxed wrong) I kept getting the 81+ rotor style. They are 79 FJ40 rotors = vented

I also got my third back from Chance at Overdrive Rebuilds. 4cyl third with 4.56's, new bearings and Spartan locker. He's setup gears for me before, along with some of my buddies. Great guy to deal with and does top notch work!

ai1112.photobucket.com_albums_k487_alove0750_003_19.jpg

I got the hub dials re-painted. They turned out pretty good. Now I'm just waiting on my chromo hub gears to come in so I have get them put back together.I got the third in the housing, short shaft up in and after getting the trunion bearings in place I got the six shooters installed. Everything was money! I couldn't have gotten it any better only to find out I forgot to put the felt/seals on the back of the knuckle, so I had to tear it all back apart.:handed:

Tonight I got both side put together; trunion bearings in, FELT ON, knuckles on, greased up and torqued. I used PLENTY of grease on the birf's and inside the knuckles. This things coming together very nicely and I'm actually ahead of schedule. There a chance I could start cutting in as little as two weeks!

Had a laid back weekend. It was me and my g/f's 5yr so I went up to Boone to see her. Got home around 6:30ish and was able to make some progress. I was going to put my hub dial/face back together since I got it painted. Well turns out the ball/spring some how magically disappeared from the zip lock baggy I had it in... So I order some new ones from WabFab, along with a new o-ring. So I jumped on the putting the spindle and other gaskets back on. I'm going to be taking it to my fab guy so he can cut off all the existing brackets and weld on the trus/diff cover. It will probably remain there until the swap starts. All I really have left to do to the axle is put the hub/rotors on, locking hubs and calipers and she's ready to role!

Progress is pretty much at a stand still until I get my chromo hub gears. Got bored and put the hubs/rotors together tonight. It is pretty much ready for the swap.

Well the time is getting near. I have done everything there is to do as far as the axle goes. All the big items have been bought and all the pain in the a$$ items have been acquired. The chromo hub gears and the steering joints came in today. I got the hubs put back together and ready to be installed. I am going to drop off the axle tomorrow so Damien can go ahead and get started cutting on it and putting on the diff guard and truss. I'm also going to go ahead and get the coil towers and link brackets ordered. Things should be ready to get started as soon as they show up :D

ONE WEEK and counting till it begins! :D

My hub face bolt from WAB FAB showed up yesterday, all the brackets are getting ordered today as soon as I get out of class, and all I have left to do is order the U-bolt flip kit, shocks and a few other odds and ends for the rear lift setup. I'm trying to decide on 10in, 12in, or 14in travel shocks... I'm probably going to just have to wait till I get everything just the way I like it or try my best to guestimate.

I got the T100 oil pan swapped in this evening. Big thanks to my buddy Jay at 601 Performance for let me use the lift after hours! It wasn't too bad, just slow and steady...

ai1112.photobucket.com_albums_k487_alove0750_0413121907.jpg

She's ready to get cut :D

Went ahead and ordered my U-bolt flip kit, leaf spring retainers, and a brake proportioning valve relocation kit from toytec. I'm going to hold off on getting the rear shocks. I'm going to see how the re-built leafs workout and take some measurements.

Pulled the trigger today with Carolina Truggies and ordered my rear shocks. I'm going with Fox 2.0 with 12 inches of travel.

Alex and Josh have been great to deal with! They have been very informative and also told me to bring it back up to the shop once it's done so they could help fine tune the coilovers/shocks so that I can get the most out of them. I can't say enough about them, thanks guys!

I DROP HER OFF TODAY! :bounce: It's going to be a very interesting 2-3 weeks!

On a calmer note, me and my buddy Jerretxx did a lil horse trading the other day. I gave him my tool box for his bed tie downs. Went in nice and smooth, plus gotta love 2nd gen parts on the 1st gens

I got all the things that I needed pulled off the truck this afternoon. He's going to start cutting tomorrow :D Everything went really smooth, didn't take but an hour or so to pull off.
