Some of you have probably seen the news related to this, but for those who haven't here is a link.
http://myfox8.com/2014/02/24/3-year-old-child-killed-by-dog-in-high-point/

Some of yall know me, some don't. I was attacked by a Rottwieler when I was 12, I have nearly 200 stitches in my arms, a few in the side of my head, and I lost a portion of my bicept muscle in my right arm due to the nature of the wound. So I take dog attacks pretty seriously. (That being said, I still love dogs, and a Rottweiler is still my favorite)

The attack was the family pit bull. I love Pit bulls, my brother has one that many of you have and will see on the trails, riding shotgun hanging out the window. But if you are going to bring ANY kind of animal into a home with young children, you need to pay close attention, and frankly there is no excuse for the child and the animal to be left alone together. The family is asking for pity... for donations...

They should be facing charges for child endangerment...

Rant off.

i used to stay gone alot, hunting trips, fishing trips, drag racing, you get the point, anyway when i got married my wife was at home alone at least one weekend a month, so i bought her a pit pup to keep with her in the house as a protector/companion she is the best dog you could ask for and never showed any ill intentions toward anyone who was supposed to be around. now fast foward a few years...as soon as my daughter started crawling around and pulling up/on things my wife decided her first baby (the pup) had to become an outside dog, not that there was an issue it was just that a 40lb dog is a pretty terrible match for a toddler and every living thing has the possibility to have a bad day and just.... we didnt even want to consider a confrontation. I think it was just the right thing to do, my little girl is six now and my old mutt is 11 and they are sunny day pals. It had nothing to do with breed it was just a physical size difference. I hate that this happened but there were choices made that caused the end result in this tragedy. so sad....

I love dogs also but you don't hear about Golden Retrievers doing this, that is why I own one.
Funny you say this. I was talking with someone on a different thread about this story. They are a dog trainer and here's a story they shared:
My mentor knew a dog who had been a family pet for years and years who was the sweetest dog ever. The dog bit their child in the face and caused considerable damage. The dog was destroyed and they requested an autopsy because they wanted an answer.

The answer came in the form of over thirty needles embedded in the dogs flesh. They had no idea that the child had been inserting needles for what was probably a prolonged amount of time ...without the dog reacting. She had finally had enough :(

The dog was a Golden. Unfortunately it had been tormented.

I have a three year old boy, so this hits home. I don't understand why people take the risk. I feel sorry for the poor little girl, but not for the stupid parents.

I do not own a dog, and never will own one. I have no interest in owning pets.

For the pit haters, my inlaws have a pit. That dog wants nothing but to crawl up in your lap and cuddle. My lab/shepherd mix is more aggressive than their pit.

i know they are a lot of folks that will stand up and say they have pits that would not hurt a flea.i wont argue if keeping a pit around your kids is right or wrong that is up to each to decide, but i do say this.the parents of this child chose to keep a pitbull around their child.they have every right do do so.they should spend the rest of their life behind bars for that decision. they were willing to gamble with their childs life they should have to pay with theirs.

So are you saying that because that certain Pit bull will crawl up in one's lap & be all cuddly & shit that all pit bulls are all cuddly? Maybe you're saying that all Lab/Shepherd mixes are more aggressive than a pit or their pit?

Just like people, no 2 are alike. If you take a child & raise them, teach them right from wrong & have structure in their entire life. Does not mean as an adult that person will not snap.

Nor does the opposite.

One cannot predict the actions of another living being that can think for itself.

I do not hate pit bulls, nor do I hate any animal. They act from instinct, we as humans do not fully understand that any more. So we must learn to respect it & be aware of it.

Any dog can react, even a really "good" one with no history of aggression... could be because of maltreatment, could be because of being put into a situation that it doesn't recognize or understand its place in the pack, or could be because of illness. I was walking one day (back in high school) and had a neighbor's Great Dane jump an invisible fence and get hit by a car while trying to cross the road, coming after me. He'd never behaved that way and had a companion (smaller, hound mix) who was always much more aggressive when we walked past. Talking to the owners after the fact, they had just found out he had cancer.

We have two dogs, almost 11/63# and almost 7/68#. We also have two kids under 3. Our dogs are some of the best I've known and many of you who have met them will (I hope) agree. We've done everything we can to 'socialize' them to different people, different animals, and different situations and, although I trust my dogs, I know they are still dogs and instinct will win out over training if they are (or feel they are) pushed into a corner. Our challenge is now training THE KIDS on how to interact with the dogs, how to treat them, how to give commands, etc.

Those parents should be locked up. Poor lil girl. Breed doesn't mean it will attack , sure some breads are more likely to attack and more precautions need to be taken.

I was bit in the face by an abused husky. It's not always the dogs fault. Parents are in full blame.

I used to be very wary of pits. A few years ago I went to Baltimore to visit my brother who has 3 dogs, one is a pit. That dog totally changed my opinion on them. He's great. He practically wouldn't leave my side the whole time I was there.

A friend of mine has a pit named Sadie. Same thing. I actually got really drunk at her place and fell asleep on the couch with the dog.

I hate it for the little 3 year old girl.. that breaks my heart..

when I was 15 I was pit by a golden.. I was cleaning up my paint bucket and he was laying next to me when I reached down to grab my brush he bit my hand.. I found out after his bone was right next to the other side of my bucket and I did not see it and we figured he thought I was gonna take it.

so any dog can bite someone.. cant blame the bred.. but you can blame the owner sometimes

I couldn't agree more. The kids need as much or more training as a "good" dog. They also need to know that other dogs are not toys and should be given plenty of space.

IMO alot of peeps own pitbulls for the wrong reasons and don't have the sense or skills to raise or control any breed of dog. The Pitbulls strong bite and bred in instincts make them a big threat to anyone they attack. A friend doing cable TV work was attacked by an old, blind 90 lb Pit and he had to kill it w a meter he was carrying, but not before it chewed his arm and thigh to pieces. The owner did nothing to stop the attack, if they could have. He was in the hospital for 2 months afterward and was very upset he had killed the dog, he owned 3 rescue dogs at the time. The owners wanted to sue him for killing their dog, he sued them and won enough to pay medical bills and them some. No excuse for a sketchy dog or one who appears nervous around kids being around youngsters unsupervised by adults.

A few years back my grandmother was walking in her neighborhood and two dogs attacked her. She carries a stick and beat the dogs but not before they ripped her arm wide open. She had to have plastic surgery to fix it.I rushed to the hospital and there I learned that these same dogs attacked another walker a few months prior. I had never been so mad as swing my 83 year old grandma laying in a hospital bed like that. I found out of her what house the dogs came from and what they looked like, she didn't want to tell me but I overheard her telling my mom. I pulled up to the house and stepped out of the truck whistling and holding my 357 mag, lucky for those dogs the animal control had already picked them up. Union County has some retarded law that a dog has to attack 3 times before it is put down or something like that. And no they were not pits, just some standard ass yard dogs

SO reading this I got intersted in finding out what breeds attack the most. I searched it and came to this . To me looks like Pits and Rotts. I would disagree having owned several really great Rottweilers. I honestly find the guys on here to be some of the best debater's I have ever met, does anyone have reasoning that these two breeds tend to be so high on the list other than to argue , "Well I had a Rotty , she was Great ?" These aren't my opinions about race, I like Pit and Rotty's ,hell I like them all, I miss my little buddy daily who died in November, I am just trying to forward the debate.

My brothers pit things he is a human... and he is probably the smartest dog I have ever known. My brother has to pad lock his fridge AND FREEZER. Because the dog will push a chair up to the fridge if he is gone and somehow get in the freezer. He and my parents Yorkie will share a food bowl.

All this being said, I continue not to blame any breed. I think a person would be foolish to leave a bulldog or lasa apsa or whatever with young kids because things happen.

The story about the golden who was stuck with needles is awful, but most animals aren't that patient... this is just another of the wake up calls I see though for STUPID FUCKING PEOPLE. {

Any animal that can harm your young child, shouldn't be around them.

That being said, I don't have the balls to post my feelings on the facebook memorials and what not, because it is a horrible incident, but everytime I hear about this it hits me really hard and I just wish people took these things seriously.

Brothers pit, thinks hes human.

The kitchen when my brother got home... several frozen meals had been eaten.

The rotty that attacked me was a dog my family got from Rottweiler rescue. We had owned rottweilerers my entire life and there are many photos of me riding rottweilers like horses as a child.

The dog we got, we kept it in a seperate pen for a few weeks, only had house time when my father was home. Never any issues, very well mannered dog. One day my brother and I are playing basketball, I swatted the ball out of my brothers hand and proceeded to take the offensive. At this moment the dog went into action and tried to defend my brother from me. My father got a bit of nerve damage attempting to pry the dogs mouth off of me, but what finally got rid of the dog was my neighbor slitting the dogs throat (repeatedly)
This dog was surely owned by people who put him in less than desirable situations.

The breed has nothing to do with aggession though, SOME BREEDS can do more damage, rott, pit, doby, german, etc... these are dogs with alot of power. Smaller dogs are just as aggressive and naturally defensive, but with a fraction of the power. That is all.

Some breeds are more prone to attack, and worse than that, some breeds are just physically more prone to damage than others. I've been bitten by two dogs in my life. The first was when I was delivering papers, a dog that I had ridden past hundreds of times just came running up to me and bit my leg when I stopped one day. The owner freaked out and apologized up and down, called my parents and finished my paper route. It was a superficial wound because the dog let go after biting me. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepards and other "attack" dogs are bred to bite down and clamp down and tear. Most other breeds bite and back off. You hear a lot of stories about other dogs "biting", it's pretty rare to hear of someone being mauled to death by a Labradoodle.

EDIT: I probably should have read the comment that came in as I was typing this one (just above mine) since it pretty much says the same thing as mine.
