Turbo Solid Axle Tacoma Build

Finished building the downpipe. Just have to finish welding it up and put the bungs for the wideband and upstream o2 in

So is it running yet?

Not yet, was out of town all weekend again and i cut my thumb pretty good today at work. Still have to finish welding the downpipe, mount my o2 sensor flanges that got here today, and wire up the wideband and boost gauge. Then she'll be ready to rip!

My motivation comes and goes in spurts. It is gone now haha. I worked 4am-4pm today but I'm gonna drag my ass out there in a few and see if I can't get this thing ready to fire up

Truck will turn over but will not fire. I'm guessing it's a fueling issue since I had the fuel rail and fuel pump out but I haven't been able to dig into it yet. I suck with diagnosing this stuff too

Some things to check.

Air in the lines.
are the injectors connected properly (not only seated properly, but the correct connector with the correct injector)?
are those pink injectors a direct swap?
what is the fuel pressure?
vaccum leaks? there are 2 ports on a stock intake tubing that should be closed off.
there is plenty of gas in the tank?
any blown fuses?
all the spark plug wires are seated correctly?
any connectors that were unplugged during the swap?

you could put some starting fluid in the intake (post turbo) and see if it will kick over then you'll know if you have a spark or fuel delivery issue.

I just assumed it was a fuel issue since that was something I had messed with. I took a few minutes to look a little more closely and it's actually a spark problem. After turning it over a few times I smelled the downpipe and it was straight gas fumes. The plug that goes from the harness to the distributor wasn't seated properly and is actually broken. I can't remember if I unplugged it at any point or not but ol well. I'm working on getting the thing to seat and line up right at the moment and we'll see if that's my only problem.

Had some buddies come over and help figure out what was going on. Turns out the igniter grounds through the bracket its mounted to instead of a dedicated ground in the plug. I had relocated it (not knowing what it was at the time) to the inner fender and didn't have it bolted down all the way. We ended up finding it by accident when the igniter bumped the oil feed line and arc'd. Now to play with the boost controller to dial in AFR and get this thing ready for the Flats

Whats the point of the boost controller? What pressure is your waste gate set to?

Boost controller lets you tweak boost pressure without having to change wastegate springs by bleeding off some of the air going from the turbo to the wastegate essentially tricking the wastegate into seeing less pressure than is actually being produced. From what I've read, a boost controller can turn boost up to 100% of spring pressure (double) but not lower than spring pressure. And my wastegate spring is 5psi

I've put about 20 miles on the truck so far and it's running pretty good. I do have an issue with it randomly going lean when making a pull. My downpipe warped when I welded it up so the v band is leaking exhaust and I'm wondering if it might just be sucking in outside air some. Also my downpipe ends right after my wideband and I have no exhaust after that so it could be picking up outside air there as well. I'm going to cut the downpipe back apart and extend it some so the v band will seal and I have another 8" of 3" exhaust pipe I'm going to tack on until my flex joint gets here and I can finish running it out to the back.

Overall the truck is running strong and it's actually kind of quick now. I had the obdII codes read and am only throwing one for evap emissions and one for o2 sensor (don't have a rear sensor right now) which are both codes I was throwing before the turbo.

Have a question that one of you might know the answer too as well. Obviously with no intercooler detonation is a concern. If the knock sensor dectects any pinging or the like will it throw a code? And will the code stay until cleared? I'm hoping that I can get all codes resolved so that if I do get any pinging, the illumination of the CEL will let me know.

Cool that works too. I just don't want to be unknowingly detonating and not be able to take immediate action. Throwing a rod through the block would suck..

Low boost and short loads, you can probably tolerate all the detonation you could experience with no damage. A big hill at full throttle would be a more likely location to blow a hole in the top of a piston. I don't have any real turbo experience, though, so take my words with a grain. There's some really astute tuners here, though. Hopefully some will chime in. And yes. Finish your damn exhaust! ;)

I was looking into a scanner at advance that shows engine data in addition to reading codes. Just a lot of cash for something that probably wont get used after I get the truck running right

Look up the Torque app and Bluetooth obdII scanner.

That's pretty slick. Any particular brand to look at? Can you still clear codes through the app? Or is it for monitoring purposes only

I'm pretty sure you can clear codes, almost positive. I've been meaning to order the obdII plug and download the app just never have. No clue on what brand. A buddy of mine runs it all the time in the FZJ80, really nice way to keep an eye on things.

One guy mentioned an ultragauge in my TW thread. Wondering if that might be the way to go instead since I can mount it and not have to pull out my phone to check things.

I've looked at those as well, almost bought one of a guy on TW but he sold it before I could buy it. May still get one if there's ever another group buy for them.
