What have you done to your rig today?

@Croatan_Kid hopefully you'll have better luck with the DieHards than I have had so far. Bought mine in April and they've had to be recharged 4 or 5 times now. First two times were my fault, but everything after that has just been the batteries failing methinks. Advanced won't warranty them either since they test fine, just won't hold a charge. I'm also pretty sure I damaged the positive side post today since it's righty loosey.
---------------
The crew's been sitting for two weeks with a bad starter, and since I haven't had time or decent enough weather to pull the old starter out I jumped at the opportunity this weekend. Going to pick up the new one tomorrow, and I've got a set of ARP starter bolts to replace the factory ones. Also rolled over 200K in the 454 truck today too, bought it with 140K and I'm kind of sad and happy about rolling it over.

Not worried about it. The store manager sold them to me and he looks out for me. I've had them two weeks and they've already been better than the last pair of red tops I had ever were. I also have that freshly repaired alternator feeding them and the truck has no possible way of parasiticly drawing on them unless the diodes decides to go bad in the alternator.

The only decent thing with Optima's name on it, the battery charger I have, has saved many a battery for me in the past couple of years.

Oh, check the terminal bolt on that righty loosey one. I thought I had pulled the threads out of one recently when my uncle's truck died and I fixed it in a Bonangle's parking lot, but it turned out that the threads rolled off the bolt itself and the battery was fine. Crisis definitely averted!

Optimas seem to be pretty hit or miss; my father put a fresh set of red tops in his LB7 and they haven't given him a lick of trouble and that truck sits a bit. Cranks off every time with no struggle.

I'm personally a big fan of Odyssey batteries; I've got a 34/78 in my 454 truck that's 1050 CA/850 CCA and I love it. Only problem is $300+ for a battery.

Came up to my buddy’s place outside Waynesboro, VA to spin some wrenches and put some in the karma bank. Installed a leveling kit on a 15 Silverado for his brother in law who I grew up with and figured out why his XJ was running like shit.

Yep. Looks like a 10SI to me, just mounted upside down. The 12SI had a different style fan on it.

Yep. It certainly couldn't hurt as far as the radio noise is concerned. There's plenty of YouTube tutorials about it if you need one, but they're pretty simple creatures.

Should be something along these lines, but might not hurt to split it open and see which one you need first.

Installed an OBA line and an Anderson jumper cable quick disconnect to the front bumper along with a GMRS radio into a JKU. I guess I’m a mall crawler now 😂. Ordered some Motobilt parts I hope to install in the next few weeks.

More alternator stuff. I've messed with alternators more in the last month than I have previously in my entire life, or so it feels.

Anyway, for 90 bucks shipped, I aint bitching. I can start the truck with the high beams on, wipers on high, blower motor on high, and back up lights on...and the belt doesn't squeal. Holy hell, that's nice!

That said, it WAS a bargain bin unit and I think it may need a regulator. It'll charge for a while, stop, and then pick back up. If I have to put a voltage regulator in it, it won't be the end of the world and I won't be mad about it. I'm going to check all the grounds first and make sure it has batt to frame, frame to engine, and engine to body. I may even run a dedicated one from the alternator to the block, just to be sure.

Truthfully, this old rig needs some new battery cables anyway. So I'll probably look over a lot of wiring while I'm at it.

It came with the adapter plug and I added a hefty 6 ga charge wire. The old alternator charged fine. Upon removal I could tell the bearings had definitely seen better days. It was kinda smooth, yet crunchy. A parts store reman from probably 15 years ago. I may rebuild it, for fun, and post it up for sale or something.

If anybody has something with a 10SI or 12SI Delco alternator, this is definitely a nice upgrade. The full price version is quite a bit more expensive and that's why I won't be upset if I have to toss a 20 dollar regulator in the mix.

I also found the bolt for the tensioner bracket with the nice, serrated washer in the back of the old alternator. Now it's where it's supposed to be. It's the little things, really 💁‍♂️

Turns out it was the 38 year old, factory plug on the truck side? Who'd have thought? 😅

I scraped it a little with my pocket knife, plugged it back in, and it hasn't missed a beat. I'll be soldering the new plug on the truck and ditching the conversion adapter. One less connection to worry about. 👌

New starter and bolts in, added a "military style" top-post adapter to the positive side; truck cranks fast now but the batteries are still low.
Going tomorrow to drop it off so the sending unit can get changed, maybe then I'll get my fuel starvation issue resolved.
Also snagged a set of cheap tows off marketplace but I think the right one is trashed beyond repair,

Not my rig but my dad's truck. The clear coat on the top of his 04 chevy had rotted away to the point primer was starting to pop through the paint. So in attempt to help preserve the roof. It got scrubbed with a drill brush then wet sanded. I decided to use some rattle can clear coat to help reseal the top. We are going to see how long this lasts.

Nice, reminded me I need to do the same thing to my 03 crv

Well, just watched the shop video from @Tom@Hilltop_Machine and got a little perspective, but still slightly aggravated.

Let's preface with, I'm currently sick as hell. I feel like a hammered bag of moldy buttholes, but I still have to drive to RDU and pick my sister up from the airport. I swing by her house and grab her old car. It's quieter, way better on gas, etc. I park my truck completely off the side of the driveway. Not even touching it. My brother in law proceeds to back in to the freshly painted, left front fender. 🙄 It's been a greatttt day, but it'll get fixed and nobody got hurt. I just feel like I need a punch card at the body shop. 15 visits and I get a free paint job or something....

Haven't gone and looked at it yet. Hoping it didn't break the clips on the grille, headlight, or marker light. Looks like it tore up the bumper cap, fender flare, and I'll see how the side of the bumper looks.

I swear, once I get a building, this one is getting parked inside and never driven or left anywhere out of my sight! Nobody ever backs in to my CUCV and tears up their own vehicle 😂

I almost forgot...I spent Sunday, Monday, and until about 3pm on Tuesday putting a transmission in my buddy's truck. I know, I know...hard to believe a 47RE needed to get replaced!

To be fair, it was a trooper. Made it to almost 332,000 miles. So, it couldn't have been original or stock. He had been throwing some power at it for a while.

I finally convinced him to call Randy's out in Utah and order one up. We also wound up doing the rear main seal AND oil pan gasket. That was probably the worst part. Would it have REALLY been that difficult to make a removable engine crossmember?!

Anyway, the end results made it totally worth it because DAMN, it shifts nice. Super solid. Their valvebody mods change the shift points and make it much more drivable. There's no question about converter lockup. It means business. They also don't give you a choice in getting a new flexplate, which is very likely a good idea. I don't want to do it again...and yes, I put in 12 converter bolts, even though they just send 6.

Oh...I took a few of those pics of my buddy at unflattering angles and sent to his wife on Tuesday 🤣 Told her "this is allll yours" He did have sense enough to have her something for Valentines since he was working on his truck. Smart man!

I'm kinda thinking that huffing brake cleaner and kerosene heater fumes for three days is what kicked off me being sick, but totally worth it. It shifts that good!

I've waited till i finished these to post about it. It was really one of those things to just see if i could do. I think it turned out pretty awesome.

I'm swapping to a waggy front 44 so i had to address the rear 8.8. Of course, i could order custom shafts, but where's the fun in that. Also, to use adapters woud mean 2 piece adapters, no bueno.

So here We are. @hurt4x4 Plasma cut me some rings. We only have Hardinge lathes at work, so i made a fixture to mill the od and id of the rings to size for a press fit on the od of the axles. Made some plugs for the old stud holes and burned it all in after preheating with a rosebud. The were cooled in buckets of sand. Next was to head to a coworkers shop to turn the newly welded shafts. They turned out pretty good. Then back to work where i made a fixture to hang them off the Bridgeport for the new bolt pattern.

Was it a lot of work....yes. But, completely fulfilling to not dump the coin on custom shafts.
