If by shiny you mean new butter knives to make sammichs with you are on the right track, or commiting suicide...
no, actually, when you love someone (take a minute to google that, go ahead we've got time) you surprise them with gifts- hint- women like jewelry (diamond and gold/silver are shiny). You may or may not be aware of that, so take that as a hint. secondly, if you love someone you protect them, not strap in relatively unsecured bombs in the back of vehicles, such as what Fuller did (another hint: compressed air is a surprisingly dangerous thing). third, you dont add in unsecured (did everyone not notice that the rear
cage is just sitting there and not bolted down?) random-ass pipes/channel in the back of a vehicle to become projectiles/schrapnel in case of a rollover- intending/ wishing them into being protective objects doesn't work- they must actually be designed and built to suit their intended purpose. I think the 'johnny come latelys' dont understand that we dont give a shit about what his stuff 'looks' like. I couldn't care less. its the fact that he continues to snub his nose at the fact that what he does is extremely dangerous. one day he will learn that the hard way unfortunately, and from what I remember (may be wrong here) he has a family and young children that can't decide to NOT be part of the ride. he's already admitted that the interior cage is dangerously close to his noggin. thats about as deadly as it can get. I dont have to meet the man, if he openly admits this, then that says alot. lets see how his logic works. Now this is how I comprehend his statement regarding the cage and the need for a helmet. "the 'cage' that I put- in by my own choice, intended to protect me, by its mere existence makes me more prone to serious bodily injury. more so than if it weren't there at all". that my friends is the most asinine thing Ive heard in a looong time. yet he continues to do this time after time. I just dont get it. the rest is just canon fodder for us to giggle and point at. I think he thinks we never built anything with spares/junk laying around. of course we have, and still do, but its safe and well built. a 110v flux core welder and welded seam water pipe doesn't equal safe, its just more for the jaws of life to cut through to extract his family. cough up and dough and do at least that part right. and take that ridiculous tank out of the back, hell you can't even see past it.

hey can i have my name back PLEASE...i like my name and am proud of it and this "marty" shananigans has gotten old now

Look, here, at this entitled motherfucker...

I LOL'd

All-Clad and Wustof are also shiny, I like those, too. ;)

x2 on everything else Chuckman said.

i guess you forgot all my stuff gets welded in not bolted...those 8"c-channel plates are welded in all the way around to the unibody rails then they are tied together along the bottom with another plate.
a 110v flux core welder and welded seam water pipe doesn't equal safe,
you and anyone else who says you can't do nothing safe with 110v welder....you need to go back to welding school i guess cause if there's one thing i DO KNOW is how to weld to the XJ unibody and how to weld with this welder and my welds is probably the only "good" and "proper" thing, lol, that i have going for me. My welds have never ever given or broke or let go. (the winch bumper i did for friend got put to some pretty intense testing recently and he even was telling me he had his doubts for holding but never gave and he was maxing out the 12,000lb winch pulling some heavy crap up some incline.
I've been welding with 110v all my life and for stuff up to 5/16 it burns more than enough but is also very very easy to weld to the smaller sheet metal on floor pans/rockers/rails without putting holes in it.
he has a family and young children that can't decide to NOT be part of the ride.
might benefit you to pay attention in other posts/threads brah....my wife and daughter choose to not ride on anything outside of greens (my daughter does like Easy St though lol) and I wouldn't ever let them ride up anything steeper than Easy St either. You talk "safety" so much........SHOW ME IN THE LAST 3YEARS WHERE ONE OF MY JEEP BUILDS HAS FAILED ME AND CAUSED HARM TO ME OR ANYONE AROUND ME. if I had the money for it, I would roll this pile of metal along with another xj with "worthy" cage down 500ft drop and still put my money on mine...why? cause i know how to weld what i know and what i do and my cage might be from scrap pieces of thick metals but i know it will hold and get the job done and then some.

something else that really bugs the hell out of me:
crowd on forum says: "john you need real control arms with real joints for worthy build"
John says: "these have held up and work just fine for my use/needs/desires and are plenty plenty strong"
crowd on forum says: "you don't listen for shit john, your an ass and need to take that deathtrap off to scrap yard"
John says: "i'm sorry you don't like my build. i love my jeep and serves me well and it wheels really well"
crowd on forum says: "John you should really get a roll cage to protect yourself from a possible rollover"
John says: "ok i built a roll cage that will suffice for me and good enough to protect me and save my butt"
crowd on forum says: " NO JOHN, we meant build some proper worthy high dollar expensive cage with big welder...better yet pay someone for it"
John says: "what i built is good enough guys. it's not a pro cage by far but hey, its WAY better than nothing"
crowd on forum says: "dam John always disrespecting us and never wants our advise...we should ban his stupid ass" ...............
Sounds about right, YEP.

this is all I have for now but the cage isn't done by far...i still gotta buy some more sch40 stuff to add in few longer pieces in back seat area down to the rock sliders and other places to tie it in together better and do a X across the ceiling but it's all i've had time for so far...and now were moving so def can't finish it yet...speaking of which gotta go...so much work packing and still have jobs to do here

Horizontal top piece of your cage at the back of cargo area near your rear latch
no its a 4"angle iron 1/4" thick piece i had and fit it up there to have more room to weld those pipes to...pictures don't show everything but if you saw it all up close, it's plenty sturdy for layover and will "hold up" to a roll....now sure it might give a little here and there in it's current state without further support but hey, isn't something better than nothing....well anyway for me its plenty so far and I'm happy with it so far until I add to it and brace it completely. adios off to work

Damn...I had to google that!

Shawn you lucky bastard! My wife likes that shiny stuff that is housed where a guard has to let you in to view (screw Windsor Jewelers

I bet you make some HELLA-good sammiches!

Please tell me you're not making anything related to a cage out of water pipe...

Don't even get into it. It's not worth it. Dude is actually delusional enough to think his cage should pass tech, and you're not going to convince him otherwise. He doesn't understand that "something is better than nothing" until it shatters apart and sends junks of jagged poop pipe at your helmetless head. Don't bother with him. Ain't worth it.

Yeah I'll have to say, Stump built a while Toyota truggy out of schedule 40 pipe. Now we all know how he drives. My buddy actually bought that truck and rolled it a few times. It works, it just dents easy. BUT... That was with proper triangulation and good notches throughout the rig.

Not defending him but a guy built a whole bouncer out of sch. 40 and did decent in the series before selling it

I don't know really anything about offroad racing of that type, but I'm surprised the sanctioning body let him run a sch40 safety cell, or that there aren't rules that specify using proper tubing for the main safety cell...

I know people make stuff from it all the time, but I'm not trusting my safety with it because it's not rated, designed, or specified for things like that. It will probably be fine for mild rollovers, etc., but when you roll off a hillside, etc., things change very fast. Given the minor price difference between Schd40 and actual rated tubing, why not use the tubing? I'd maybe use sch40 for subframes, sliders, whatever, if I didn't care about the weight, but I'm not using it for a roll cage. Again though, decent tubing is barely more money...

Ladder racks, that's what it's for. It's perfect for that if you're just looking for cheap. And staircase railings.

Wait, what am I saying though...? People can't even triangulate or properly tie a cage together with the vehicle, so why does the choice of tubing matter at all?

There's the whole "it's better than nothing" argument, and that's somewhat valid. I'd rather have marginal sch40 protection than nothing at all. But there's also the "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right" argument too.

Love the use of bed frame angle iron.. well done sir. Please use it often!

How many times did it take a serious roll?
Yes it works great for making a frame etc. But it's when it's stressed that it's a problem.

I think this XJ made it across the finish line at KOH in under 5 hours this year. He was disqualified though for having an an unfair advantage for all the extra weight and an abundant water supply inside his cage.
