Tow "tag" in NC tech?

I've read this thread twice and still can't figure out what I'm supposed to do. Please correct my math if I'm wrong.

My truck is a 2005 Silverado 1500 4x4 crew cab. the curb weight is listed at 5,299#, gross weight of 7,000 pounds. it's rated to tow 7,000 pounds.

to cover the max weight of the truck and max trailer I would buy a weighted plate for 14,000 pounds.
to never tow, but cover the max capacity of the truck I would buy a plate for 7,000 pounds.
to cover the max capacity of the truck and tow a 4000 pound trailer I could buy a plate for 11,000 pounds.

you need to be tagged to cover the weight of the truck, trailer, and everything in/on them. If you drove it loaded onto a scale, you need to be tagged to whatever that scale reads. Plus they may also cheap to verify you are not towing more weight then the truck is rated for, but that doesnt directly related to the tag itself.

Just got a truck from the dealer. I forgot to ask, but am I going to get a weighted tag in the mail?

Probably not. Unless you requested a specific weight, it will probably be a "truck" registration with a regular car "First in Flight" tag. That limits you to something like 6 or 7k gross, depending on what the dealer requested. You'll have to go back and get a Weighted tag... or at the very least, up the weight limit on the registration.

Yes they just slapped my Camry tag on it. Called the dealer and talked to the lady in charge of tags and she got me straightened out. Ill get it in the mail in a few weeks with a 2 month sticker on it until I pay the property taxes on the truck,(not sales tax) and then I get a year sticker....

Soon I'm hoping I'll be able to sit in a chair normal again.

I've always been denied the online renewal for NC weighted tags and had to pay in person at the DMV office...until this year. I don't know if it's because last year I dropped my tag from 13-14k to the 7k minimum, or just coincidence. Every year, I would try renewing online, but no go, until this year. I just got my sticker in the mail yesterday :)

It may have been covered elsewhere (I just read the first page and the last page), but I HAVE been pulled over in my excursion while towing a triple axle trailer with my skid steer on it. The trooper asked if I knew what I weighed, I said no, and said I didn't think it mattered. He looked it up and sure enough I drove away without a ticket, but at first he acted like he didn't have a clue. (Regular non weighted tag)

QQ about weighted tags and F450/F550 size vehicles. Is anyone aware if commercial weighted registration is required for a vehicle with a high GVWR? My F550 has a GVWR of 17,500#. Both my insurance company and my bank say it's a "commercial" vehicle but I'm not sure what that will mean at the DMV.

The same thing confused me at the DMV with my F350 dually. It's just classified as commercial because of the weight capability. Meaning, you have to put weighted tags on it. Not commercial tags, but weighted. It's OK, it's just a classification.

Man I wish I had seen this thread before. I probably would have gone a whole new direction with my future plans. I bought my tow rig and trailer so far. Tow rig is an M923A2 (21,500lbs) and trailer is a matching m1061 (5,000 lbs) power wagon weighs 8,600lbs and lifted Jeep is around 5,000lbs. My next step is CDL license and getting tags for the trailer.

Part of the reason I settled on my excursion over a pickup. Because it's an SUV, it's classified as a multi-passenger vehicle and only requires a regular tag. I'm sure our Illustrious state goobnerment will find a way to F it up for us sooner or later.

Make it an RV. Cheap tags and no CDL.

On a side not you sure won't be getting anywhere quick haha.

Ditto...
In the case of my F-350 C&C, the insurance had to written on a separate (from the other 4 vehicles) "commercial" policy, because the VIN doesn't align with F-350 PICKUP TRUCKS.
Aside from a raping on the 17k# weighted tag, business as usual from titling/registration/tagging perspective...

Yup, thanks for the posts guys. Ended up not having any issues at the DMV whatsoever, just got my weighted tag and moved on with life :)

OK so I have a somewhat unique, I think, question about weighted tags. When I bought my 97 F-250 Crew cab short bed PSD 4x4 in March 2017 I told the tag office that I wanted 15k tags. They said OK. I paid my fee and got my tag. Didn't pay much attention to it until yesterday, Christmas day when I was hooking up my trailer. I have a "regular" tag. My registration states 15k weight but the tag itself doesn't identify itself as being weighted. Called tag office this AM and told that's the way they do it now. Anybody else had this happen?

Previous 7.3 Excursion owner here. It all depends on the vehicle classification on the title. If it says “MP” which means multi passenger, you don’t require a weighted tag and can haul up to 26k total weight.

Can’t remeber what the identifier for a truck is, but that’s when you need a weighted tag. Although I don’t miss that turd 7.3 one bit. I’ll pay the extra $$$ to have a cummins.

I just went through this last year myself. I have 17k lbs on a “university (ASU)” tag that doesn’t state weighted. Registration states 17k and as you know they make ya pay for it!

I've got two regular weighted tags since then, seems odd and like a good way to get a second look from nchp. Tag offices are a private business which is why the service and answers people get vary wildly...I personally would tell them to fix it because the blue looks better than the red.
