Square cage...here it is

Somebody take a bunch of pics of straws in different configurations and explain it.

I'm trying to un-confuse the person who made the thread. I deleted it, I don't care anymore.
Good. I'll follow suit, since I apparently added to the confusion.

Yes you added triangulation to the windshield,

What about a vertical X in the b pillar hoop?

What about a horizontal X in the roof?

The pictures I’ve seen still just show a ladder style.

Where a rectangle just becomes a parallelogram when loaded.
What's B pillar? And yes I know I didn't do X but what I have will work, and there will be much closer braces put in between each of those parallel bars soon. This was a quick safe enough to get some piece of mind just in case..of course ALWAYS wheeling with mentality that I don't have a cage and so far, its worked for 16yrs, praise God!

I am interested in having a roof for rain/sun protection so what are my affordable options..serious now, no sheet metal screws response lol

Depends on your budget...you could do some type of bikini top like CJ/Wranglers use, or go old school like the old M715 with rope and canvas. Welding on sheet metal would just get messy and probably result in a head lac...those leak like a mudder fugger, so....I wouldn't go that way.

Agreed.

I like this idea, easy to fab up and add lacing cleats. Maybe not blue though, because it looks like a cheap plastic tarp.

I mean, it's not my vehicle so it doesn't matter how silly it looks. :D

lol true, I wouldn't go with the blue tarp look either...I was thinking the OD green canvas, but I guess that wouldn't match the tiger motif, now would it?

Might could tie it in with painting some black tiger stripes across that too, who knows?

I swear I've seen an M715 with the top being what looked literally to be a canvas top with rope laced through cleats just as the pic you showed. I'll keep looking.

He did mention HMMWV style...memories of driving these old rattling loud bastards...

I'm going to return to my previous mattress on the roof comment, and substitute that for a tent. Roof problem is solved.

This for the win! :smokin:

So you have 3 supporting members if there is a member each 1/4 length across the horizontal tube and they are evenly distributed? Is there a vertical member in the middle?

You can't divide something into quarters with only 2 tubes; you need to post a picture because it doesn't make sense.

Also, it sounds like you're saying that removing the center tension/compression node by spreading the supports apart is an improvement? The only improvement if that is done is to improve the visibility looking out of the windshield.
Get that damn tech outta here! This is a fuller thread! He's going to teach all of us about the science of metals!

Thats what I was looking into..so that's the company for threaded rods and such, good to know!

Nuh uh..no...hell no. Do NOT use all thread to build links. He was joking and I realllly hope you know that. I can't even think of a good way to use it in the construction of suspension links or panhard bars...not to mention that most of it that is readily available is soft as crap and probably equivalent to something like Grade 2 hardware.

^What he said...please don't. I was being a Richard when I posted that, all for laughs. DON'T do it. And same here -- all I've seen with allthread is crap quality.

John, basically what these fab Nazi's are saying, Everywhere you have a square, split it and make triangles. Just because you used Heavy, thick metal, doesn't mean it's safer, just means it's heavier. The more weight you ad up high, the more top heavy it will be. Everything from the springs up, is sprung weight, which will make your roll factor increase. A lot of talk about the engine not being able to take it up a hill. Not true. Your issues will be in gearing, be it in the t-case and or, axles. With enough gearing, you could use a Briggs motor, you just couldn't go fast. Take the advice and do the triangulation, will save your cage in a roll over, and Save you your wife and daughter's life too. I noticed on your vertical bars on the A pillar, look like you spliced them. Did you sleeve it? plug weld it too? If not, you need too. As far as your top goes, you said you wanted some rain/sun protection. If you do the triangulation, You can put plastic, or coated aluminum on it, and pop rivet it in. Neither of those will ad much weight.
On another note, to better understand the whole triangulation thing. Picture every point of impact. Like you had it hanging from a crane. The Jeep is dropped. on every point possible. Then picture in your mind where the impact will be distributed. The more areas that the impact will be distributed, the better it will hold up. The safer it is. No doubt that what you have now is better than a stock XJ. But, it can me improved a lot, with a little.

Keep working on it John, you'll get it.

See you on the trails soon!
