Buggy Hauler trailers

Sold my 34' GN and am now in the market for a different one. Currently I am looking at a 20' Kaufman 14k GN equipment trailer. Fully loaded OTD, I'm looking around $4900. Driving over the fenders to load is NBD for me. But...

Buggy haulers are pretty sweet too. But I am not a huge fan of the price tag. I see MAXXD and PJ offer them. Each of them are around $5300-$5500 with only 5200# axles. Ihate trailer tire blowouts. That is a contributing factor to choosing 7k axles under my last couple of trailers.

I'll consider a tag along, but I do prefer the way GN pulls. You know, no sway or anything (@shawn and @BigSouth) :flipoff2:

So, what other options are out there for buggy haulers? Any first hand experience from you clowns?

Budget is $5k

What is the problem we're trying to solve here?

Also, if the 5200# axles are 8 lug (some are, some are 6), the only difference should be the size of the magnet.

I wanted a smaller trailer than I had. Old one was too long and wouldn't fit up to our new house.
As a result, I'm going no longer than 20' deck length. Fenders are fine as I have some super sweet ghetto fabulous ramps built to keep the weight of truck off them when I load.
My Ranger fits on a standard width trailer fine. No NEED for the 102" width of a BH.
But, BH trailers are pretty cool in their own right with the added width.
Really just rambling and seeing who else makes them. Between the two listed above, their cost is way more than a more useful trailer that'll carry more weight (Kaufman GN I'm considering).
I will start clearing land for my shop in the spring. So the ability to more easily load and carry random construction and land clearing items will be a plus.
I want to stay with a low boy (equipment style) to keep the COG down with my Ranger on the trailer.

PJ for the win! You're a true baller... what's a couple grand?

There is a place in Rock hill that will build you a custom trailer however you want. I know the owner David and his wife. They are good people. I have never pulled one but know several people who have and never heard a bad thing about them. May be worth giving him a call and see what they can do for you.

I say regular old gooseneck. You can fill it with lumber and not worry about it (or your pin weight).

I’ve never had a complaint about the quality in my PJ trailer (past or present). Part of the extra cost is that it’s powder coated. That part isn’t worth it IMHO and they won’t sell it to you painted. My old man still has a Kaufman, just like the one you’re talking about. Not saying you wouldn’t know better, but Kaufman sold my Dad a 15K rated trailer, with 14K axles, and tires that wouldn’t support either. Trust, but verify my friend.

17.5s are a very worthwhile upgrade....just saying. Even if it blows the budget.

Aside from the equalizer bolts on my trailer not having nuts put on them, I have no complaints. Well...and the placement of the license plate kinda sucks, but that's a small thing.

If they'd put 3750 lb tires on instead of 3520 lb, they'd actually be rated for 15k. Still a little over the 7k axles, but I don't know how much difference there is between the 7k and 8k axles. I could have gotten LR G 16s (4400 lb), but it's harder to find a G rated 16" tire locally than it is a 17.5".

I like Kaufman's. The quality is reflected in the cost. My 24' deckover was a great pulling trailer. No complaints whatsoever. Aside from the lumbar destroying ramps. Dem fools be heavy! Right @rockcity?
Probably gonna upgrade to the Firestone radials instead of the no name Maypops.

You could just get the springs for the ramps you know. I can one hand mine with ease.

I've got a 20ft 15k deluxe from Kaufman and I'd buy another one. For the money they're hard to beat. Thought about a tilt but just wasn't in the cards. Plus I bet a tilt 20ft would be heavy as hell.

Come on down to my area and pick up a Kaufman, do it on a Friday and I’ll treat you to a lunch that won’t leave you disappointed. BBQ Joes does a slow smoked bone in pork loin as the special every Friday. It’s amazing.

@Chris_Keziah and my buddy @Noel both bought brand new Kaufmans and are very happy.

Question: does a GN pull better empty than a tag along? I would imagine it wouldn’t beat you as bad.

In my experence, either style hookup can beat you to death empty. It all comes down to how well balanced the trailer is from nose to tail with axle placement. Most of the big manufacturers have it figured out. Another big factor is radial tires. Once you go radial, you’ll never look at another bias trailer tire again.

I like my 20’ PJ Buggy Hauler. It’s got a 4’ dove which is nice for loading cars if needed. Pulls great and knock on wood never had a tire issue. I paid right at 5k but it had a welded on box, winch mount, the 4’ dove and something else. There is a place in PA that sells them for less but I wanted to buy local.

I’ve got an 18’ PJ B6 buggy hauler. 7k lb axles. Pulls like a dream empty or loaded. The only thing I’d change about it is I wish it was longer. I had to fit it in a parking garage when I bought it though. It’s roughly the same overall length as my truck.
