Random Thoughts.....

Really irritating to get asked to come look at doing work to have them use all your input on the proper methods to handle it themselves.

Welp, spreading some knowledge is like doing a good deed I reckon.
Quoted a big network job once for small insurance agency. About 35k just my cost in equipment (including a new server and handful of laptops). All new network gear and wiring, etc. Didnt get the job, although they had been a regular client for years. Didnt hear a word from them until a few months later.

They called and wanted me to "look at something". They had used my quote as a shopping list and tried to DIY. Whole office looked like Christmas morning with opened boxes everywhere. Had been like that a while.

I turned, said "good luck" and left.

Yeah I can relate to this, people are always trying to save a buck and think you are out there to shit them. We always get cold calls where they bought material and want us to install it. NOPE...... So you want me to install material I didn't mark up, but you probably paid retail anyway, and what happens when you didn't buy enough. OR calls where can I get this (Specialty item) then a month later they want me to install the same product they were asking where they could buy it. I get it and try to save money myself when possible but I generally know when to pay a professional. Especially if it is a business expense that in the long run will help maintain the business or make it money by being more productive. We have equipment fixed by others all the time, my time is better spent.

There's a lady at work retiring today after 42 years of Federal service. 25 years active duty Army followed by 17 years civil service at various Army research institutions.
This kind of career commitment to Army service just blows my mind.

Ive got a meeting like that on Monday.
Got a call from a pharmaceutical and supplement distribution company that was required to ad back up power back (because of a new FDA regulated product line) in February.
Went out and they had a very simple need. Came back and submitted a sub $50k turn key bid. Equipment, engineering and installation. Actually put a really nice 20 page proposal togetehr complete with sealed stamped drawings....(watermarked and pdf version only of course)
They told me that due to Covid they were putting the job on hold until Q4. Cool Ill follow up in late September.

Then they called me Wednesday. Apparently they didnt put it on hold, they moved forward with Jim Bobs residential generator service. The gen is installed but it wont run and he has quit trying to fix it and wont return calls.
They want me to figure out why it wont run. I dont know why it wont run, but I do know the model they installed isnt code compliant for their application. I also know their counties Chief Electrical inspector is coming over to my farm site in his rifle Saturday...
So that $6k they saved is getting ready to cost them about $40k more than it would have to start with..becasue everything they've done has to be ripped out and started over.

Ive got to decide over the weekend if I even want the business.
I started out low just to be nice...
Grrr...

I had to run out during lunch, and I saw a jackass in a Tesla with a license plate on the front that said Zero Emissions. Belews Creek power plant is right up the road a few minutes burning coal to charge his car :shaking:.

This is why I don't like "Tesla people".

Hey man, I'd rock a tesla all day (At least til the battery died). Those things are quick! Acceleration like no other.
I'd love to have a Tesla, I just don't like "Tesla people", hence the quotation marks. Its the first mass produced electric car I would actually consider driving.

FIFY

Those were major turds with an abismal range and no resale value.

Not a lot of people want an electric vehicle in the first place, let alone an electric vehicle that isn't a luxury car to balance things out.

I'd take a Chevy Bolt though. They're kind of cool looking, and not that expensive. Teslas are cool and all, but they're expensive and the styling is pretty boring for the price. Not like the original Lotus-based Tesla Roadster. If Tesla had a coupe, and it was better looking than the current lineup...

I guess sending my wife to Lowe’s is kinda like my wife sending me to Hobby Lobby.

So I tell her I’d probably be in the office until after Lowe’s closed...she could either go get one or wait until tomorrow and we could sleep upstairs tonight. She picked this one...

Not a bad choice...but I was expecting something more in $50 range, similar to what we had. I asked her why that one...expected her to say touch screen or WiFi capabilities. Nope, because you can customize the background color.

Remember the Nissan leaf?
Drove our company Leaf from Raleigh to Wake Forest for a meeting & hated every second of it! I'm 6'6" & was forced to drive there...tossed the key to my co-worker when we got there & said 'tag...you're it.' Damn thing broke down & wouldn't charge 2 weeks later!

We bumped ours down to 73° last week bc it was so humid and I had to put on long sleeves.

Geez we’re usually at 68* downstairs and 70 upstairs. Was just checking accuracy downstairs yesterday. Biggest thing though is I hate stagnant air.

That's why I like ceiling fans. I like the air to move but my comfortable temp range changes with the seasons. Our thermostat is set on 74 in the summer and 66 in the winter.

I worked for an architect for several years, a mentor and still a good friend but an old hippie who'd turn the air of over nights and weekends. I drew the line at anything with a 5 or an 8 in the tens place.
