Lots of interesting news today

Damn yall working with the wrong people my old job where I hated my bosses I still talked with the field guys all the time. My new Job I haven't meet someone I wouldn't hang out with. One guy puts on a family movie Night once a month during the summer at his farm for everyone with kids, everyone goes and plays golf together. Heck they are shutting down one day to take everyone to top golf.
That's a great work environment. If it's genuine, it's great. But it's the bullshit inclusion and top down "team building" that is painful to watch and participate in.

As far as my month here can tell it's pretty genuine. Nothing or anyone is forced to be apart of any of it. They are doing an office expansion and ordered a big ass TV and have said they'd be disappointed if we didn't use it and the new space to have a poker night or Monday night football hangout. Honestly from what I've seen they'd rather hire someone who knows nothing but is a good fit with the company instead of someone who knows everything but is an ass.

And I know pretty shifty work environments when I turned my notice in my boss said he wished he would have fired me along time ago but he didn't have anyone to replace me with

I learned this from a great manager a long time ago, when we were working on hiring a bunch of new people and building out what would be the work team for the next 5+ years.
Especially for government research jobs - he pointed out that as long as somebody is halfway intelligent and motivated, you can teach them any new skillset or technical thing, But you can't fix or change a personality. Especially in an arena where its hard to fire people, it matters much more than somebody is a good cultural fit than they have the skills the teams needs right now.

I have to pay for my lunch everyday....so where is my free lunch voucher?! Covid and Inflation and high gas prices affect me too!

Why not give everyone free breakfast and lunch?

Where are the parents?

Where are the parents?
Sittin at home collectin your tax money and talkin on Obamaphones while poppin out more tax credits, duh!

I'll be honest, with how much we pay in property taxes, and all the other wasteful spending at schools, I don't think any kid should have to pay for their lunch. Lets cut some administration costs and build buildings a little less fancy, and make sure everybody can just eat. These free school meals are the only meals some kids get.

Yup, and they all waste more time than anything. I am not sure what resource they are supposed to create, other than a new version of the "good ole boy network"

I felt the same way until I saw one work properly. My company has a DIC (Diversity and Inclusion Committee) I was placed on it by HR and rolled my eyes but "Yes Ma'am"...turns out with the right focus they can be great money makers.
What we have found is that when fighting for talent everyone goes to the honey holes. The big high school and tech schools and fights for the same candidates. If there are 10 companies fighting for the same 100 candidates someone is getting numbers 95-100. If you go into smaller more impoverished pools, often times the top 10 at those locations wont be better than the other top 10, but they are much better than numbers 50-100....and there is no competition for them. You can take the entire top 10. It has been a financial win fall for us.

Plus as a career sales guy, I have generally sold to people like me. Ive said for years - if a customers only likes golf, wine and video games - I probably wont do good with him. But if hes a car guy or likes to hunt and fish and shoot we will get along. But a sales team needs diversity because a customer base is diverse. If there is a given minority customer that everyone ignores and a similar minority walks in his door he will often feel more comfortable and open his wallet quicker.
Yes its a good ole boy network but its more good ole boy networks.

Agreed, and a lot of companies are fighting for the same talent and its a tough market, they are trying to do anything they can to ensure they can still attract top talent.

I don't personally care about any of that stuff, but plenty of great employees to do as well.

This is the other point. We here are all roughly the same demo and interest group. But as we attract and fight for younger talent (and customers) these types of things are important to them. Even if you think ESG is a waste, your targets may not.

I'd also have to say that if you have so much extra time to be the President of such an activist group, you may not be giving 100% to your job. Considering Elon Musk is the guy that sleeps on the factory floor, I think that might be big with him...
🙄

I think you may be reading President wrong. Again speaking from my perspective our company has a DIC committee, we meet 4x a year for 4 hours each. We elect a governance body. This isnt something that they are doing on work hours outside work. This is a work committee.

To further my contrarian viewpoint today.
I dont support hand outs for adults, but I fully do for kids.

The kid didnt choose to be born into shitty parents. Feed the kid, show them the way out and up. teach them to fish so you dont have to feed them fish forever.

I can say for me, I was on free lunch until I graduated high school. Many, many days that was the only meals I ate.
Yeah Yeah insert fat man jokes...

I can assure you public schools are not built fancy.
Here's the newest $60 million dollar, 1000 student school they built in my county:

6 tennis courts, 2 ball fields, a 3000 seat stadium, 1500 seat auditorium, etc

When I went to high school, we used loose floor tiles to scrape the falling asbestos off our desks...

We must bid different school projects my friend.

Granite counter tops in teacher break rooms, stainless architecture galore....
Now lets talk about sports fields. Field turf equivalent to NFL teams, weight rooms and facilities better than many small private colleges....

Hell I just quoted a public high school with a $3MM solar energy and recovery package that isnt even tied into the schools load panels, nor is it net metering.

It is literally a solar array and battery storage system with no way to draw off it. Because LEED and because fed grant money

And I liked to eat. That's why your taxes are so high.
👍

The point is that they are saying inflation and rising costs are the reasons for continuing the free lunch for all program, not shitty parents. I am experiencing these affects too? So where is my free lunch? When is enough? This is one of the best examples of starting a *temporary* program for more and more free stuff and it basically never going away.

EG isn't quite that bad these days but nowhere near the level of fancy of stuart cramer.

Serious, related question - how much of the $60 million was from private donations? How big is the sports booster club?

you have the ability to work hard(er), make life adjustments to account for inflation, and pay for your lunch.

An 8 year old does not.

HOW DARE YOU!!!

Every school must have a focal point in which an out of town architect can call his statement piece. Nevermind the fact that the clearstory entry with massive one sided awning will cost $3.4mill and be nothing but a vestibule. We can take that out of the mechanical budget. No school needs 4 pipe systems with chillers and boilers. Fuck em!! Let's put a BARD unit on every class like a mobile unit!!!

I shit you not.. the last 3 schools we designed we were forced to use BARD units because the architect has some stupid focal point, learning stair, entry canopy, statement piece that for some unknown reason the owners rep agreed too.

Sorry . Struck a nerve. My firm has designed MEP for schools since 64 and this past year has been an embarrassment

We need more flexible collaborative safe spaces....

They just built this new shrine in Columbia. My daughter went there this year for a volleyball game.

You walk in the front doors and stair (pun intended) straight up at a 2.5 story stair case that fans and funnels ever wider. Going from 8 doors wide at the bottom to probably 125' across the top of the stairs.

I feel horrible that my brain thinks this way , but walking in I said to my wife "In this day of mass school shootings why not just introduce a cattle chute to make the gunmen not work so hard and slow down any would be saviors."....its ridiculous.

But man the statue at the top was nice....even though no one knew what it was supposed to be.

Had to be a trans triple minority post turtle in order to qualify for statue status these days.

Or it was the architect

I have no idea. Probably not much if any. Gaston County is like Char-Meck tax rate wise, but with none of the services, so they have plenty to spend on a redundant police/sheriff department and shrines to the Great Troy of Caster.

Very valid point. I could understand an honest debate that calls out the real issue and gives kids the support they need.

But starting an entitlement program temporarily and then continuing to justify it for BS reasons just leads to more entitled adults who think they have the right to free food.

I can?

A 14 year old can go mow some yards or help the neighbors move if times are tight.

If the government is assuming EVERY SINGLE 4-18 YEAR OLD needs food assistance every freaking school day.

Damn. I bet @Ron never even thought of that. What an idiot he must feel like.

No offense man but your personal experience bias is showing.

I mentor kids every day who have no idea what these things you speak of even mean.

What if you grow up in an apartment and there are no yards to mow. Not that you could anyway because no one you know has EVER owned a lawn mower.
Everyone around you has lived in the same spot your entire life because they know no different. No one is moving.

He's 14 in your example. He cant rive has never owned a bicycle, or learned to ride one, he can only go where he walks. Has no tools or skills.

But man, this due a few years older said you could run some weed for him and make a couple hundred quick. If you are real enough they might let you carry the good stuff in a month or two...

The point is to STOP this cycle....
