'82 Jeep Scrambler Daily Driver

Finally found the time to make it up to see @Blaze and pick up his good intake heater. Thank you!!

Got it all cleaned up and ready to install. I've read online that an intake/exhaust gasket kit will include the intake heater gasket and o-ring. I hope they still do...

Also a first for me today. While I was cutting out a blank to cover the EGR ports on the intake my grinder got bound up and kicked back. I lost my grip on it and fell straight on my foot. It bounced on my foot, bit me twice, then landed straight on the cord.
So, I lost my whole afternoon while waiting for stitches at the ER, and I need to buy a new grinder.. Not how I planned on wrapping up my weekend..

Mike, loving the project man. Didnt even realize you had a thread on here. You have to watch out for those grinders man! Haha!

Sam

@farmboy Thanks Sam! Swung by one of our projects the other day to see how things were going. Your guys were long gone but work looked great!

Swing by and say hey next time y'all are in Raleigh. Tell Mac I said hello!

Well, what do you do when you find out that you and your wife's first try at having a baby turns out to be twin girls?

You buy a full hard top for your Scrambler so you can put a back seat in it :D

It needs a few fiberglass touch ups before I paint it.. I'm considering having someone else do the work on it since my honey-do list has grown exponentially. If anyone knows a good fiberglass guy in Raleigh let me know.

With that being said, I haven't had any time to touch the Jeep. I'm hoping I can finish getting the house baby ready this month so I can spend what time I have left before the girls come (roughly three months) finishing some things up on the Jeep.

Congrats man!

From my experiences with a pregnant wife, the honey-do list will grow in the last few months as they start nesting.

Thanks all!

I bought the top from a guy up in D.C. I saw it listed on cj-8.com and jumped on it. I know he had it up on his local cragislist, I'm not sure if he listed it anywhere else.

Just gotta keep picking away at that honey-do list!

I actually whittled away at the ever expanding honey-do list this weekend to go out for a little cruise around on Sunday. Still haven't worked on it, but I'm at least able to enjoy it on these beautiful Spring days, which is very nice.
I would like to be able to go to Uwharrie with it by the time UNF closes this year.. but we'll see how that goes. Still have to figure out my t-case shifter, get my front axle regeared, and try some new wheels to see if I can fix that high speed vibration. I'll get there!

Drove it to work yesterday and today as well!

The nesting is almost done! I've got cribs built, car seats purchased ($$), closet organizers built and installed, room painted and organized, stuff we want to hang on to but don't have room for in our 1948 1100sf home moved to a storage unit. Short rows now!

With that being said, the wifey went out of town to visit her mom in CO so I'm left to my own devices, which means car parts made their way back in the house :)

OEM intake is all mocked up with the MC2150, so it's ready to install. I also got the Jeep inspected so it's ready for the swap!

Nooow back to the honey-do list

Still no headway. No garage means I can only really work on it when it's nice out.. but when it's nice out I like to drive it. Rock and a hard place..
My wife has also really wanted to ride in it for the last few times before she gets way too uncomfortable, so we've been taking it on dates and what not. Going to tear into once this next band of weather passes us though.

For fathers day, even though I told her not to spend any money, my wife bought me the winch plate and new cable I need to finally install the 8274 I bought a year ago. I plan to use 2/0 gauge cable to wire the winch, through a keyed disconnect and secured with one of those Factor 55 lockable bolts. Good plan?

This is the keyed disconnect I'm planning on purchasing: Flaming River Big Switch

Is that a good switch to use, or is there a better / safer solution? I want it easily accessible so I'm planning on securely mounting it straight to the winch plate.

In!
Was a very straight forward install. I did have to fight with the power steering bracket to get it to fit. Even still I couldn't get the big through bolt at the top to line all the way up.
I checked my timing and tuned the carb and it cranked and ran like nothing had happened.
On my first drive, the very first thing that I noticed was my gas pedal. It wasn't hard as all get out to press and actually felt like a normal car. That's a relief.
The second thing I noticed? Definitely down on power compared to the Offy and 4bbl. Pretty surprised how noticeable it was, but I haven't started tuning the carb any more than just my initial tune, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm running a little lean right now. I will be buying a wide band A/F gauge to further tune it, just down the road. That's a lot of money right now with twins on the way.

Starting to wire the winch up. This is not at all what I should be spending my Jeep money on (still no 4wd), but having an inoperable winch on the front is killing me.

I'm swapping over to mil-spec terminals so I'm running new main battery leads first, 2awg. This is my first time doing a crimp and solder connection. I don't think I did too bad, but it's not pretty.

I'm going to run the winch in 2/0, through a Flaming River keyed switch mounted next to the winch. I'm considering branching off of that to an Anderson connector for quick accessory connections (like jumper cables), But I'm still thinking about it.

The 8274 has one bad relay so I'm thinking about doing the solenoid swap as well.

Cable lugs look nice. I am using the same exact battery terminals too. I got finished doing a bunch of that for a solenoid box relocation. I did a lot of research prior to beginning mine and saw only negative support for any solder. Instead I put silicone under the shrink wrap where any copper wire was exposed after crimping.

Did you just solder up the lugs after the crimp or dunk the wire into molten solder in the lug then crimp?

So did you ever fix the vibration?

I haven't had the time (some may read that as haven't made the time) to dig deeper into it with babies on the way and what not.
I'm still leaning towards wheels though.

Honestly with the around town driving I've been doing I haven't even thought about it...

I first slapped some flux on the cable and the inside of the cable terminal, then crimp, then heat and solder.

I used the shrink wrap that has the glue built into it, so once heated the glue will seal everything off from the environment. You can see the glue coming out of each end of both pictures of my lugs.

Here's the end product:

A small update - The MC2150 I bought came with .48/.49 jets and a 7.5 power valve. I bumped the jets to .50s and the power valve to 8.5. So far it seems to be running better without running rich.

I also filled it up for the first time since I swapped the carb and intake and it averaged 17.6 mpg! That's up from the 11.x I was getting with the Offy / Holley combo! :)

Nice I've got the 2100 on my 8, before I regeared the jeep I got 21mpg average on a drive to hilton head and back. Nice to hear of the improvement over the Holley setup, I've been toying with the idea of changing mine. I guess I'm better off leaving it as it is.
