Here come the hurricanes!

I’m curious as to why that flag wasn’t taken the hell down?? That’s a not a wind indicator wtf?

I doubt anyone has been on that tower in the last week or so since a known storm was coming.

But in some ways, I kinda like th tatterred flag. Kinda reminds me of our country today. Battered, bloody, stained and scarred. But still standing. Facing the wind and the rain and not backing down. Her best days may well be behind her. But she is still fighting the good fight.

Side note. I want to know what brand and model camera that is

Kinda my feelings as well. Would have been pretty bad ass for it to survive. But in some ways it looks equally badass now. Kudos to the guy who retires it later.

Today is the anniversary of the attack on Fort McHenry in 1812. Those colors still don't run. ;)

Guy posted a live video from there yesterday evening. I assume he left soon after or early this morning.

It wasn’t just the live feed video, he was walking around and talking about the wall of water/clouds headed in.

Richard is a pretty cool dude. Lay off a little. He isn’t out on the tower, and for good reason.

I'm Chromecasting the Frying Pan shoals YouTube feed. Works great as a sound machine for the newborn, and it's cool watching the storm roll in. Thanks for sharing @Ron.

White noise for the baby...genius! The live feed from the Atlantic Beach pier is a good shot too. You can see the gazebo on the pier rocking back and forth a good bit.

Quick update: I'm between New Bern and Havelock. Power has been out since 6:15 pm. Winds are picking up to somewhere above 70mph. Rain comes and goes, but when it's here, it's pretty strong. I'll go get the generator in the morning after the tail end of the worst of it is gone.

Everyone is losing their shit about downtown New Bern flooding. Let a decent east/northeast wind roll it and the same shit happens. Everybody says "but that's storm surge and the storm isn't even here yet!" Well, kiss my ass, but the storm IS here, just not the eye.

It's going to be a long night.

I hope you all are safe over there and God bless!
Just read a post that if you lose cell service and WiFi you can still update the voicemail greeting on your cell phone periodically with your updated wellbeing status and a time hack and it will be what is heard if someone tries to call. Just a thought.

If you have cell service you don’t have signal for the new voicemail recording to upload. Awesome idea though for overloaded towers though!!!

A co-worker looked that place up, apparently its a B&B of sorts? You can buy a share for ~$25k which gets you & 1 guest 2 nights/year IIRC. Or you can volunteer to do projects out there & possibly stay for free? Neither of us bothered looking in to it. They had pictures on their site & it looks like the tattered flags are retired in the rec room behind the walls of the pool table & dart board. I think they had a picture of a camera too...might be able to see some info on it? I know they have an underwater cam too; not sure which one was in the picture.

A little while ago they were reporting ~7k outages. Now the winds have reached the point where they've pulled crews back to keep them safe.

FUI - PWC & GUC are reporting outages of 50 or less. I know GUC has a tiger dam around one of their control houses that flooded in Matthew. Duke has also said they will not roll trucks until sustained winds are <40mph & will not put buckets or helicopters in the air until gusts are <30mph.

Can call from a landline in theory and change

I follow a page on Fb called central and eastern NC weather. Dudes an ametur that does this as a hobby, but he accurately predicted Matthew would follow the coast where everyone else said it was coming inland like 2 days out. He has also pretty much nailed all the snow ice storms too. He's been constantly updating maps showing estimated rain totals (official ones) plus his interpretation. He also linked to a power outage map. Looks like currently it's around 90k out statewide. It's going to be that way a while because a lineman friend of mine says OSHA regs won't let them get in a bucket or climb a pole til winds are under 35 mph.

I could hear the wind moaning through the steel supports and wondered if anyone was on it? It used to be available to rent but I don't think it is anymore.

But if power is out then wouldn’t landlines be out too?
I can tell you weren’t a comms guy. A true land line works as long as the lines aren’t torn down to the house as long as you have a regular handset and not a cordless handset. The voltage to run the phone travels over the lines from the phone companies central office or slik.

Lol def no comms knowledge. I went from turning wrenches to infantry.
