If you want or need a CDL...

Went and took the Class A tests today. Passed all three after a short time studying last night. I forgot you can skip questions, I would have missed less on the first test (general) if I had skipped a few. There are some really stupid questions/answers. Who knew you could have a crack 1/2 way through your brake drum and still be OK. Or maybe it was 1/2 the thickness, either way, I picked 1/4 but the answer was 1/2. A few other stupid answers I don't remember them all.

Oh yea, if you are starting off going up a hill, the proper way to start off is to accelerate and then release the parking brake, who knew.

It's official I now have a class A CDL. Took me 3 tries to get passed the driving test, it's fun pulling a 53'er behind a sleeper 10 speed with just under 1 million miles on it. Took the test in Mocksville through Davidson Davie Community College. $300 and you get 6 attempts using their truck. Word to the wise, they cannot give training once the test starts so if you have a question ask before it starts.

6 tries?! Mine was one and done o_O Our test trucks were a bit “fresher” but still slap wore out trying to find the gears and clutch up or down. Thank god they didn’t deduct points for grinds!!

Sounds like I need to call them. Place in Burlington wants $800 to use their truck....

Really glad I kept my CDL. No other reason than to have something to fall back on if needed. I haven't needed it in almost 20 years.
Same here. I got mine when working for Walt Disney World as a bus driver, It was a Class B with air brakes and passenger endorsements. When I moved to NC, the DMV upgraded it to a Class A with my existing endorsements. Haven't used it since but I'm not letting it go.

So I have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon at DCCC, I am pretty clueless on what to expect. Any pointers? This will be my 2nd time driving a manual transmission semi truck (first was an old cabover for about 1.5 hours till it broke down) and I've never pulled an enclosed semi trailer before.

He can give you ALL the pointers so you learn from his attempts! From the walk-around, parking, shifting, braking, tight ass turns, & the actual road test 🥴 I think he's working til 3:30pm today but I'll shoot him a text to make sure he sees your post.

1- don't drive yourself to the test site in a truck requiring a CDL
2- when doing the walk around. Point out everything. I mean everything up to the point you think it's being silly.
3- keep 2 hands on the wheel during turns
4- avoid bus loads of nuns

Wait, what's a pretrip? I am using their truck/trailer.

The walk around where you point out the different compenents and what they do. Also you say "I know the belt is OK because I see no cracking or chunks missing". Same for tires, suspension, steering, etc.
I walked around the truck with the DMV examiner and described everything like a Fuller run-on post.

Do they allow spectators? Will there be popcorn? What time is this event? Will they have chairs or will I need to bring my own? Can we heckle with air horns? Or do we have to cup our hands around our mouths?
