But if the flux slag is still covering the weld how can you tell
dude cmon, i take wire wheel to my welds when i do inspections...these "fresh" welds you guys are talking about on my recently installed axles are fresh and look like crap cause I'm busy packing and stuff and don't have time yet to finish everything...I will go through and clean everything and hope to paint it before April ride.
most professional welders still knock the slag off their welds.
you forget I'm not a professional welder so that doesn't apply to me i guess lol lol...that was a joke btw.
You guys in all seriousness I'm not trying to sound like a pro welder but I'm so comfortable with my welder that I "know" when my weld is good and when it's bad....trust me I've had my share of "off days" where I knew instantly I was going to have to redo/grind/second pass a weld that i just knew instantly sucked...

You do realize this is so scientific that there are college degrees and certifications specifically for welding and testing of welds?
yes I do very much so. I don't pretend to know ANYTHING about the science of welding, welding terms, welding tests, pressures etc..etc...never claimed to
Yes I know @Mac5005 has that saying from me foolish saying long time ago but that was just some blabber i was talking

Dude come on, you've been asked if you clean and inspect your welds and said no. So why would I expect you to clean them up at any point. That's why I asked. Only pictures we've seen were of uncleaned welds so why would anyone think that you clean any of them later on

Then he tells his "military" story. Despite being in the service less than 4 years he knows better than EVERY person who has came before him. Thhis country that has assembled the greatest army the world has ever known, he knows they do it wrong. In his heart he cant consider the fact that their ways work for reasons he has not yet understood. So since he is right and they are wrong he quits and then preaches on about his self righteous bull shit.
Ron i didn't need 4 years to find out how the system worked...boot camp was enough but then i gave it a chance in the 'real deal' part and no different there. I know there are some hard working soldiers out there who build up their rank and love what they do. I however, not you or anyone else, do not care what rank you are or if your the freaking president....you want respect from someone you have to give it. All people are equal despite their own or worlds views of 'success' or 'rank' or 'value' therefor everyone deserves a fair chance to start with. I watched 2 kids commit suicide in boot camp on firing range...WHY? cause they wanted to quit, too much stress, but weren't allowed and took their own life because drill sgts think they own the dam world and can just beat down everyone who runs thorugh their company. Lets face it, suicides have always been a sad factor of the military and that's why in early 00s sometime they came out with the "Stress Cards"...so people had more a chance to complete their training without being overly stressed to the point of taking their own life. This was a serious matter back then, especially throughout the 90s and when it came out in the open, something had to be done about it. My brother who served 6 yrs confirmed how much easier boot camp was nowadays with the stress cards because of that new system and it's not picking at the weaker people...it's just the fair way to treat people period. Not everyone is designed to handle people degrading them and not everyone can be so passive to allow people/strangers/high rank people to just belittle them for no apparent reason. People have history to them and when they are belittled, degraded, mocked, pushed to the limits.....yeah they tend to just crack/blow up or worse and take their life.
so Mr. Ron, if you don't agree with this you are entitled to that but does not make me wrong for believing in this morally right way to treat people!!

You are right.
Some people are allowed to feel that way. We call those people mentally weak and unfit to defend the liberties of this country's founding fathers. They arent useless bums. They can do other jobs. But they cant be a soldier. I cant be an Olympic sprinter because I'm slow. They don't need to redesign the Olympics to let me be competitive. And stress cards are an insult to every brave man who has risked or sacrificed his life to defend her. The entire point of boot camp is to make the weak crack so they can be sifted out.

In your case and judging by your posting history it sort of worked, you were just too dumb or proud or both to admit it for a while.

You dont know shit about your welds until you test them.

I dont know what you are talking about that I have from way back?

Everything I've quoted or addressed is from recent.

Stop saying you know your welds are good. You don't.

You think, but you don't know.

I've seen thousands of welds that passed visually, looked great, and failed miserably.

I can tell you why, technically, but I honestly don't believe you care, or will listen.

The other issue is that I'm not giving my knowledge away to someone who devalues it spewing bullshit you know nothing about.

However I am glad to share it with anyone who truly wants to learn and Improve, but I don't think that's you.

I honestly think you are here for the drama, and crave the attention subconsciously, no matter the words you type that say otherwise.

I am.no professional welder either. I weld as a hobby. I honestly don't think I've ever been paid to weld a single item.

However I have spent years trying to improve myself and share what small amount of knowledge I have learned.

FWIW I've read this thread daily....mainly out of morbid curiosity, and I have actually learned SO much from you guys....especially about how much MORE there is to welding. I mean, I use to think it was all about how fluid and smooth you were with placement so you didn't just make booger welds, but holy hell there's SO much more to it!
Now...sheesh, I realize I didn't even know 1/100th of how difficult or how critical PROPER welding could be.

Maybe we should create a new thread just about welds and how to improve separate from the weld porn thread? I'm in.

Ive decided that when I get done with real school and life isnt so crazy to go back for welding cause of this thread. I'm by means a good welder. I usually have friends weld critical stuff for me so I won't die lol.

You know, it now scares me to think how many people just go out and buy welders and actually try and fix structural components and drive them on the road

I mean...my kids are now driving! My wife! And some billy-bob is out there with a 110 welder trying to relocate spring perches on his tacoma to swap in a waggy front axle

Yeah...I'd be ALL FOR as much edumacation as you'd be willing to share!

For years, I've wondered if welders should be considered a controlled item for exactly this reason. I wonder if one should have to pass a test to buy one.

Morbid curiosity, yep that's it.

It was said in the other thread, but this is what I've been thinking for a couple of days...

Now this dude is calling me an asshole.
Fuck You
God Bless You.

There was this time built this thing and no one else ever lived my life and did what I did and...

Gee this is kinda fun actually.

We call those people mentally weak and unfit to defend the liberties of this country's founding fathers
whatever floats your boat dude...just cause someone doesn't appreciate being degraded doesn't make them weak by no means and doesn't mean they can't be a good or great soldier...it just means they "choose" not to put up with people's shit cause they've had probably enough shit in their life already and don't need a "somebody" telling them their shit...but again, that's just me apparently.

What type of discharge did you receive? That will tell me alot.

I can tell you why, technically, but I honestly don't believe you care, or will listen.
listen dude..you offered to send me plates...i accepted. you wanna send plates, fine. you don't, fine. do i know welding technique, NO. do I know proper welding terms and sciences NO. Do I even know the "proper" way to weld with different metals and different wires, NO. Can I properly use a welder with gas, NO. Can I properly according to nationalized tests pass a welding with a 110v on the plates you said....I DON"T KNOW. so there you have it, been saying this all along.

The only different point I added was: been welding long enough to know I'm not a shit welder obviously but am very very far from a licensed or professional welder.

I'm not trying to be an ass but maybe they don't cause welding isn't as hard as people make it out to be??? just a thought. I picked it up without even trying. I actually thought it was one of the easiest tools i ever used, maybe cause I've worked with my hands all my life and tools but nothing about welding was ever hard except welding upside down. Just like anything in life, some people pick things up without needing school (ie: entrepreneurs) and others like me have enough street smarts and sense to learn things on their own...just sayin.
Hell I still SUCK with my new Plasma Cutter...I can't get the technique down for shit for getting pretty cuts and even cuts and all that without it looking like crap or burning through my tips so quickly BUT...I constantly watch videos and read up on how to get better and it's working but slowly. same principle with my welding except I picked it up with ease and never had a hard time learning..If I remember correctly within weeks of my first Miller welder, I combined 2 factory XJ Lower Arms for long arms and that was a highway jeep on 8"lift with 36s in Raleigh driving to work and to the trails everywhere...drove roughly 2yrs then blew up motor!
some will say the "self taught" is the wrong way to go and that's fine for you...but it's worked for human beings for centuries now and some of the best inventors, ideas, machines, techniques etc. etc. have come from just plain old "self taught" people

For years, I've wondered if welders should be considered a controlled item for exactly this reason. I wonder if one should have to pass a test to buy one.
oh yeah, and if they did this for welders...they would have to do it for every power tool. Saws, grinders, torches are way more dangerous and deadly than welders and people die from those machines and other mechanic machines every day than they do from....people's hack job welding. don't know about the news you watch but I don't recall the last time a death was on the news of, "fox news here reporting live..we had a runaway jeep on I40 today folks due to an apparent hack job welding done by unprofessional welders causing this jeep to roll into oncoming traffic taking out power polls with their...what appears to be trampoline cage" OH MY GOSH, did I really just do that...I'm dying of laughing right now. wooo, i needed a good laugh
