Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

How do you like those MTRs?

I really like them. They have great traction on dry rock. They do pretty well on the loose stuff around URE also. They don't grip like the iroks I had in the loose stuff but the road manners and overall performance are very comparable. I've put about 500mi on these tires so far.

Hey guys. Sorry my updates have been few and far in between. I have been working on my postal again. Just last weekend I finished up the front bump stops. I got the PCM re-tuned and it made a huge difference. I still have a check engine light for a high idle so I need to figure that out. After the trip I found that my Advance Adapters transfer case crossmember bushing mount lost the bolts that bolted it together, so I swapped out bolts with nylon locknuts and a little bit of locktite. Other than that, it's running pretty good.

Getting busy!

They are simple Daystar bumps I picked up from Liquid Iron and I fabricated some mounts on the frame for them. I still have to add a bump stop piece for them to hit on the spring plates but that will come in a few weeks. I still have to fabricate some rear bumpstops too.

Okay to the fun stuff. I got the jeep out for the Uwharrie Fall Jamboree. Pics are of the event. I had a great time. The weather was perfect. "Daniel" trail was tough again and I actually broke a front driveline on the far right hill climb. Onto some more photos from the weekend. I'll be out there again this weekend then headed to The Gulches in early November with some friends.

I just thought this photo was funny. It puts my jeep into a size perspective. My buddy's TJ has 41.5" rockers. My postal 37s. It looks like I'm following my big brother around. Hahah!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_3197_zpscb05cf79.jpg

Continued photos. I rode around in my buddy's TJ on 37s for part of the trip too. It felt good to rest and relax every once in a while.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_3228_zpsc8d944f4.jpg

Night wheelin'. I definitely needed more lights underneath so I ordered up some 7" LED lights from baby hulk on the site. They made a huge difference. I'm going to add the little square rock lights in each fender well also so I have more visibility on each tire also.

Sunday going up Daniel.

Getting sketchy right before I broke the front driveshaft. Pictures never do anything justice.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_3392_zps592357f6.jpg

Broken front shaft. It's okay. It was a junkyard YJ shaft I had laying around. I'll trim the twisted splines and use it as a trail spare.

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_3396_zps274cc808.jpg

Upgraded rock lights for entry and departure lighting. I still have to get the little square rock lights installed. I'll do that next week. FYI. The garage was 100% dark until the lights came on for the photo. I plan to swap out the reverse rock lights with some white LEDs also.

Things to change ASAP: I'll be completely revamping the rear brakes this weekend, ditching the Currie Enterprises "spacers" for my junkyard Ford Explorer rear 9" disc brake conversion that I installed on the 9". The seals always leaked so I ordered up some Ruffstuff weld on caliper brackets, I'll run new bearings and seals on both sides and use the common K20 front discs and 11.75" bronco rotors. I also need to lengthen the front bumpstop mounts so they actually work. Haha!

Photos from last weekend. I met some cool people on the trip. I took my new girlfriend on her first 4-wheelin' trip and she loved it so that is a huge thumbs up....towards her of course. :D

Hey guys. I finally posted some videos of my postal going up Daniel in URE. I hope they work...

Been watching this build forever. Congrats on getting everything working like you wanted it to. Looks freaking awesome.

Thanks so much! And thanks for following! I have some more upgrades to make so I'll update the build when I get them taken care of.

I haven't worked on my Postal in a while. Been busy with other fab work and it even got a vacation from our spring URE trip. I bought the rear brakes I'm swapping over, just have to make time to get it finished up! I just finished a cage for my YJ. Also working on my buddy's shitbox XJ and bumpers, etc for my buddy's TJ. AND building a bitchin' coffee table for another friend. Busy busy!

My YJ cage I just finished...

Got the old postal out on Saturday and took her for a ride. Doing a little grocery getting! I think it's about time I start working on this old turd again! I did get an automotive airbrush kit for my birthday from my parents. :smokin:

Also, my girlfriend threw a little birthday party for me and got me this super bad ass Jeep cake! I think she may be a keeper.

Ditto on the "keeper".

So it's been a while since I've updated this build. Lots of changes again. I sold my house and bought another one with the sole intention of building a nice shop in the backyard. Been in the house only 2 months and the garage is already well underway.

My initial rendering for idea and size purposes.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_5432_zpscmdxe2ui.jpg

Some photos of the real deal. So happy it's all happening. I've been dreaming of a dedicated shop to build jeeps for a long time. I built the largest size I could build in my neighborhood (and largest I could afford). Plans are for 8ft tall doors (9ft wide) across the front. Tall enough ceilings to add a lift inside eventually. 220v wiring, lots of lighting and all of the other standard goodies as well.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0100_zpspqldytvx.jpg

The side garage door will be 9ft high just in case I have something larger than the 8ft doors can accommodate. I'll have a awning off the full back of the garage also for hiding "projects" from my neighbors. Haha!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0101_zpselin3nax.jpg

As for the postal. It's been busy getting the space ready for it's new home.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_5499_zpsjo0ko6us.jpg

I did break the dang SM465 shifter in half while driving it around my yard hauling limbs from the tree I had to cut down to get the garage underway. I don't know how this happened. I told my gf, I must have Superman strength! HAHA! I'll weld it back together and it should be good to go another 30yrs I guess.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_5493_zpsaxqwbqfu.jpg

Also underway is a rear brake rebuild. The 8.8 exploder brakes never would stop leaking using the Currie spacers so I am removing them all and starting over with weld on caliper brackets, K10 calipers and ford bronco rotors. I'll be cutting the inside of the original 9" drum brakes to account for the factory axle shaft depth in the axle tubes. Hopefully when I finish, it'll all be good to go with no leaks and more stopping power. Also underway is some other tweaks to get the jeep ready for the Jeep Jamboree at Uwharrie next weekend.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0056_zpslr8h25oh.jpg

Looking good. Can't wait for it to be done especially since Susan the TJ is included in the rendering which means she will be spending alot of time over there which also means lots of new parts which equals cooler jeep

Haha! You bet man! That TJ gets better looking every year! Especially once we build that cage for it. :smokin:

Busy weekend in the garage. Main focus was to tweak some things that I've been wanting to change for a while.

First was the brakes and leaky rear axle bearings.
New bearing and seal without those stupid Currie spacers that leaked so bad with my axle.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0173_zpshxvzsnkw.jpg

To use the correct spacing for the axle bearings and seals, I cut the center out of the original Ford " drum brake center so the spacing is exactly to factory spec.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0184_zpslhk2vz8g.jpg

Cut out drum brake spacer I make in place.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0186_zpsiartj2yj.jpg

Also wanted to make the axle serviceable without removing the third member so I welded in a drain plug.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0190_zpsalhkwgtt.jpg

Added some more LED rock lights for night wheelin'. Simply because everyone knows night wheelin' is the best! These are little 3M 3 LED pods that I placed in every wheel well and in front of the rear tire.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0192_zps27nyk74a.jpg

Finally got the rear brakes mocked up. This was a '97 Dodge Ram rear rotor (for 12" rotor with 5 on 5.5 wheel), K10 Front 4wd truck caliper and pads, on a Ruffstuff weld-on brake caliper bracket. Their bracket needed lots of tweaking to make it work but after a few hours of fitment, it fits tight like it should.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0206_zps4d1fynuw.jpg

Also built some bump stop mounts for my front bumps to contact. Simple yet effective!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0209_zpsxkmnikvn.jpg

Fun little side note. My 9" axle flanges were too large for any OEM rotor to fit over so I had to turn down my axle shafts so the rotors would fit over them. My idea was to crank the jeep in gear and let the axle turn using the engine power while I ran the angle grinder against the side of the shaft. It worked perfectly for anyone else needing to do this.
ai1024_photobucket_com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_th_IMG_0205_zpsm7aszaov_mp4_.jpg

We did this same thing on a friends Jeep. Works well, esp with a hand throttle.

URE was successful despite that shitty leaky rear axle is still leaking. I'm going to try to use an open breather setup and see if that helps. Also going to take the axle shaft back out on the one side (that is still leaking) and cake it full of RTV sealant. Onto pics.

What is looked like all weekend...rain!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0275_zpscszh1hw4.jpg

Then got all the way home, cleaned the jeep, took it to the gas station and it broke down. Looks like junk in the gas tank got into the fuel filter.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_0295_zps2v4tuf28.jpg

No worries. That is why you have multiple jeeps. That way you can pull one home with the other. hahah!

Then onto some updated garage shots. It's almost ready for me to move into it.

Yea I was just wondering I was looking into building a shop just trying to get some ideas

I can send you my contractor's info if you want to have him quote the project. They are the very best around I can tell you that! They hand pick all of their materials, do all of the footer work, framing, vinyl, etc. Just let me know.

Just a photo I put up on Instagram the other day of the transformation. Still a lot to do but it's cool to see a before and after.

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_IMG_1093_zpsptt6q8ml.jpg

No real work on my postal. My garage is done to the point of utilizing it so I've been working on some other projects.
I just finished fabbing this cage for a buddy's TJ. We will be adding a harness bar behind the seats and seat mounts next. The basic cage construction is done though. All 1.75" DOM .120" wall tubing. main side A-C pillar tubes are one piece of tube per side, no splicing anywhere on this one. Simple and strong.

Hey Bruiser, here you go. Here are some more photos of my new garage. I still plan to add more wiring, additional overhead lights, additional 220v receptacles throughout the shop and some more outside lighting. It's to the point of "usable" so I'm taking full advantage!
